Sergio ?

If Sergio takes a RS, we will definitely have some depth issues at LB:

Muck, Norton, Robinson as starters. Bobino and Earnest as backups. (I'm guessing that Bobino backs up Norton and Robinson takes what would have been Sergio's place in the starting lineup) Probably would need a true freshman to play. Don't know if that would be D Johnson (will he even stay at LB?), E Acho, or possibly Ryan Roberson.

Has he had surgery yet? I don't know anything about the surgery or its recovery time. According to wikipedia, "patients can often return to sports (or other intense activities) in about 4 months," but it can take longer for "athletes who play at the highest level." The article provides eight months as an example.

Does anyone know if these estimates are accurate? Also, when did he have the surgery?

Kellen Winslow Jr. had the same surgery and recovered well from it.

I've yet to see it confirmed that Kindle actually had Microfracture surgery. If Sergio did, I think he would benefit from taking a Redshirt year.

I thought that I read somewhere that all of the players who were to have surgery had them. This was right after the season was over....there were 3 or 4 people on the list.

I'd like to see more Keenan R. and a healthy Sergio just once before he leaves.

I am all for a red shirt year if this is as bad as it sounds.

Pickryl was a chronic problem with the same shoulder. Sergio has had the ankle and now the knee. The guy I am concerned about is Eddie Jones with the shoulder.

"who do these guys use for an orthopedic surgeon?"

I had complete shoulder replacement surgery last May by one of the Docs at Austin Bone and Joint. I know they treat quite a few Longhorn athletes.

In fact, my physical therapist was an ex Lady Longhorn volley baller who had back surgery by the same Doc when she played for Texas 6-7 years ago.

Where did the information come from that his injuries were stress fractures, Mack Brown's website says the surgery was to repair cartilage in his knee.

Also, where did we get the timeline for his recovery. I find it hard to believe he won't be ready by September. I can't even remember the last time I heard about one of our players taking over 8 months to recover from a surgery.

Microfracture surgery is a farly new technique for repairing cartilage in the knee.

Wiki entry

If that is indeed what Sergio has had done, then we may not see him on the field this fall.

It's definitely a hit or miss kind of procedure. Chris Webber never reallly recovered, but Amare Stoudemire has been terrific since his rehabilitation. This surgery is the reason that Greg Oden is out for the entire NBA season.

The best orthopedic sports-injury surgeon in the world is Dr. James Andrews at the Univ Alabama-Birmingham. He's the guy all the pro athletes use.

If he has to sit out during the 2008 season, he could get a medical redshirt, but it would probably be a wasted effort. He will be draft eligible after the 2008 season, but while I doubt if he would be stupid enough to go through the next draft, he will be in the 2010 draft following the 2009 season.

In other words, we will see him for only one more season no matter what happens.

I am a big fan of John Pearce at Austin Bone and Joint, myself.

He was named one of the top 50 Dr.s in America by some publication that I saw on his lobby wall.

I don't know if you get to that point in your career by being a "bad" surgeon, I was just wondering.
