What is the best way to sell a car that is a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire with 90,000 miles and serious hail damage?

well, it wouldve been the cash for clunkers if you'd have been in the market for another car...now - geez, how much you want for it? i have a friend losing everything in divorce and a car is something he needs to keep his job

No offense, but you might have to pay someone to take that off your hands.

Option #1 - Put a sign on that thing and leave it on the street corner.
Option #2 - Goodwill: Get blue book value as a tax write off

CarMax, CarMax, CarMax...

and a few years from now, if you happen to be travelling in some small town in Mexico, you might spot your once glorious Pontiac Sunfire cruising through the town square.

List it on Craigslist, price it to sell, and you'll have people fighting over it. The key is pricing it to sell, but leaving a little room for negotiation. Go to edmunds.com and do a True Market Value analysis to find out what it's worth. Be honest about the condition and don't freak out when you get the answer. My guess is under $1000. Sold a clunker this way last year. Listed it on CL Sunday around 11pm and the buyer drove it away by 9am Monday.

The used car dealers motto: there's an *** for every seat. There are people who want cheap cars, so put it on Craig's List and see if you can get a buyer. If it's licensed, inspected, runs, and especially, working A/C, someone will buy it.

I wouldn't think Carmax would take it with the hail damage. If I had full coverage the insurance company would have totaled the car. My daughter has been driving it and so I have upgraded her car and just want to find someone that could use a car that works has A/C. I think I will try Craig's List.

Thanks guys.

I had bad results with autotrader, also. And I think CarMax only buys later model cars with a certain amount of resale value.

Not anymore. You can only deduct the actual amount the charity sells it for.
