Self Staying at Kansas

Newest rumor is Vandy's Kevin Stallings.

He's not a grand slam like Self, but a damn good coach who is attainable. Not a bad second choice if true.

I wonder how Pickens is taking it?

hell i'll coach for a cool 3 million if the 'ol pick' is interested.

Interesting how Self's situation mirrors Miles' situation from just a few months ago. Win a national championship. Turn down an opportunity to coach at the alma mater.

Except, Miles is a douche, while I respect Self...

****..why would he leave? Does the fact that he's got history at

hell, if Texas called me up and asked me to come write ads for them for 2million, and I was currently in a gig making about that and doing the best work around, I'd stay. Why go somewhere just to have to rebuild when you're at the top of the game?

I don't get a move DOWN for more pay..seems counter-productive. The next gig wont pay as well if you bomb that one. Plus, I think he wants to head on up to the nba...can't do that from a mediocre team.

The 2+2=5 rumor is that Self would be interested in the Sonics' job once they landed in OKC.

But I think most coaches at high D-I are driven, and they're already driven enough to want to coach at the highest level, or at least thought they wanted to.

That was the belief about Barnes when he left Clemson. I would imagine there are a lot of guys who would come to look at things like, say, Mike Montgomery -- "I've been the college guy, and I've done well -- I can do this the rest of my life. But if the NBA called, that would be a new challenge. Can I do that?" Self doesn't sound like he's ready to make that jump. But in five years? Who knows?

All you need is one friend who makes it to a power position in the NBA. I heard Self has that -- R.C. Buford.

Bob,

Self and RC Buford are supposedly really tight -- as in, in each others wedding tight. They were both grad assistants under Larry Brown at Kansas. Buford's son is a walk on at Kansas right now.

It's an interesting link between the Spurs and the Sonics too, with Sam Presti now the GM for the Sonics, who made his bones with the Spurs. Also, Clay Bennett, I believe used to own part of the Spurs. However, I can't see the Sonics dumping PJ Carlesimo anytime soon. There's no way he'd sign on to take those lumps with such a young team if he wasn't assured that he'd be there on the upswing. Anything can happen obviously, but I can't see Presti going for that plan. He handpicked Carlesimo.

There was an article in the SA paper last week talking about Self taking over for Popovich when he decides to hang it up. That seems more likely than OKC with his ties to Buford.

The other name we're all hearing is Jamie Dixon of Pitt.

He's actually been my hope all along, as I never really thought Self would leave Kansas.

I think Dixon would be a home run for OSU.

Jeff: Two questions (reasonably serious):
1) If you were Dixon, would you leave Pittsburgh for Stillwater?
2) What does Ok State have to offer that Pitt doesn't (other than Boone's money)?

Dixon is a California guy, and Stillwater is even further from North Hollywood than Pittsburgh.
