Selecting a gas grill

My wife and I are thinking of getting a gas grill as a sort of combo Father's Day + birthday present. (Thanks, wife.) I am nearly clueless about these things. Our budget is $500 - $1,000. I'm willing to plumb it into our gas line if the cost isn't prohibitive, but I don't mind a tank model, either.

I would rather put our money into quality as opposed to features. Basically, I want something that will last a good long time and will allow me to cook for up to maybe a dozen people. It has to get hot enough to sear steaks, too. A rotisserie might be nice, but I don't need a deep fat fryer, etc.

There are all kinds of options -- can I get some advice on materials, construction, and brands? Thanks. (For what it's worth, I understand the gas versus charcoal debate, and indeed, I have a tradtional Weber grill for smaller meals. I'm specifically looking for a larger gas grill that will allow me to cook for my family of six plus friends with minimal hassle.)

I love Holland grills, have had mine for years. Use it once or twice a week in spring, summer, fall. Somewhere down on this board is a link I think.

However, it is indirect heat. Really, it is an outdoor oven. Does great on chicken, fish, vegs, etc.Have done an entire turkey. Not so good for steaks or hamburgers that require direct heat,,,, i.e. true grilling.

I've had my Ducane for seven years now and it still works great. Ducane's grills are built to last. If I ever have to purchase another grill, it'll be another Ducane.

for that price range it isn't even close, go to Sam's and get the stainless steel Member's Mark. It's a fantastic grill for that budget, nothing is comparable.

From my limited research, I've been pulled towards Ducane, as much for the great warranty as any other reason.

Tell me about the grill at Sam's . . . why is it so much better than the competition? I'd have to find someone who is a Sam's member to buy it, as we are already CostCo shoppers and don't need another membership. I wonder how the Sam's grill compares to the "Kirkland" model at CostCo?

If you want it to last get one with brass burners, they last far longer than other burners and burners are typically the first thing to go.
