Segway Human Transporter

Anyone here own a Segway?

I rode one for an hour or two in Chicago this weekend. Now I'm totally hooked. I was concerned about riding around in heavy pedestrian traffic, but these things are a breeze to control, even at the very slowest speeds in the tightest of conditions. Walking now seems like good excercise, but a crappy way to get somewhere.

I'm dying to buy one, but I'm having a hard time plunking down $5,000 without having any idea of how long I can expect it to last.

How long to the batteries last?
How long to the tires last?
How long does the motors and gyros last?

I make lots of short trips alone in my car. I can see putting a Segway to good use. I'm currently mapping out a 2.6 mile route to my office via back streets and sidewalks.

Any real world experiences out there???

Just about what I expected...

I might have said the same thing last week. Trust me. I didn't feel rediculous at all, rock star was more like it. All the comments were along the lines of:
"Nice ride"
"I want one"
"That thing is awesome".

My new mantra - "Walking is for Losers".

you never heard this from me, but I always ride the one the astros own. they are badass. not $5,000 badass, but kickass regardless.

what is the potential for the elderly who have trouble walking , who are currently using a walking stick or a walker, but not yet confined to a wheelchair? could they handle it?

President Bush could not handle it right off if I recall. Nothing on him, it is just kind of awkward for some at first. I think the chance of them falling or not having the balance for it may be an issue. That group of people have a wheelchair thing for impaired people that is awesome. It goes up stairs too. A buddy of mine who is in a chair told me about it and is thinking about getting one for when he goes to Europe.

But he prefers his regular chair since it gets him some exercise, which is one thing a Segway takes away. That makes it less cool to me but it is a neat concept. Bring it into cars and now we are talking.
