Secretariat at the 1973 Belmont Stakes

I watched this race as a kid. I'm not a big horse racing fan, but it is easily one of the most memorable sporting events in my lifetime. I remember it like some of the Ali fights.

Secretariat was a man among boys.

I get emotional every time I watch that race. He was just so beautiful, and he loved to run.

After watching the link above, I watched ESPN's segment on the race. It was 10:30 minutes, but I still wanted it to go a little longer.

Sure they shmalzed it up with an NBC Olympics type of story with melodramatic music and over the top quotes. But unlike NBC, which makes me want to put a brick through the TV and to fry Bob Costas with a cattle prod until the battery dies, this segment really kind of chokes you up.

Pretty cool. Didn't know they only raced 5 horses back then. Not a suprise that more horses haven't won the triple crown since then with larger fields.

Hhornpharmd.....5 horses was not the limit on the Belmont (I don't think there really is any limit) but rather the amount of money and qualifying times to get into a race. People simply did not want to run against Big Red at that point.

If you go back and look at footage of Citation in the 40's there were races where he only raced against 1 or 2 other horses because no one thought they could beat him.

So what did Sam produce? he finished 2nd to Secretariat in the Derby & Preakness and then went nose to nose for 3/4 of the Belmont until Secretariat wore him out. Undoubtedly would have been the Triple Crown winner if not for the greatest horse.

not near on the same level of secretariat's bellmont, but seeing the overhead when Big Brown kicked in in the preakness is pretty ALLSOME as well. its an awesome thing seeing 'perfection'
