Second Life

The uber Dorks I work with play it all the time. Then again, their First Lives aren't that great.

I read somewhere that Second Life players were predisposed to have played Everquest. Guess what game the uber Dorks at work played?

It can veer dangerously into uber dork-dom...however what's interesting is the number of universities and local government institutions such as libraries that have opened up virtual campus/locations in second life. There's a whole realm of pedagogy being studied right now in using second life as an educational tool.

My wife works for a large, hi-tech company and they use 2nd Life for user conferences, product launches, etc. So she has a avatar. It's kinda cool on one hand, and very dorky on the other. I don't see it taking off like some predict.

I find the whole idea kind of frightening and have successfully stayed away from this thus far. This is the first step towards robot domination.

My wife took a class that was partially taught on Second Life. She indicated that that didn't work too well.

A couple years ago, she also got onto it with some of her friends from World of Warcraft. Maybe they wandered into the "wrong" area, but she said most of what they saw was a cybersex orgy, and there were other avatars with penises attached to any location on the avatar it was possible to attach such things.
