Man, we are missing a lot of talent in the first two jr days. This is getting depressing. Looks like only 2 top 250 players.

Handler, no need to get that depressed actually. There were a good number of players for 2016 who were of high caliber that we have started on early. Nothing much for 2015, but that we should have expected. That will only happen with campus visits later this year, and we will have to do well on the field for that. Mack used to get top players to visit at junior day itself and they used to do that because of the fear that Texas will offer and get other top players committed at the junior day and that they would not have an offer later. That was stuff that only Mack could do.

The reason why many 4-star and 5-star guys didn't visit this time was that they are mostly in a "wait and watch through fall" mode. The staff has made inroads into many (and have curiously stayed away from about 3-4 guys that many are puzzled about too, but that seems to be how this staff evaluate players). Anyway, there was no danger of Texas racking up commits and not offering later, and thus many top 2015 players stayed away, that's all. Almost everybody that this staff is pursuing hard for 2015 is still in play and most will be there in fall too. So don't worry. This is all well-expected, and this is exactly what this staff had to do.

But they did get some players for 2016 early - many of whom aren't rated yet. I fact, they have done a great job with many 2016 kids.

If we do well in fall and win at least 9, then you will see that the 2015 class will be in top-10 or top-5. Because the indications from a lot of players are that they are feeling positive about us. Naturally, if i were them, and if there wasn't a danger of not getting offered just because of not attending the junior day, I wouldn't waste time on that hoopla wither. I would come in November and December and get much more personal time with the coaches, after I see the on-field product. That is what they are all doing. This actually happens in most top univs too, with their junior days (unlike at Texas under Mack).

All we should check is if the players who did come, and those who are in touch with Texas, are giving ANY sort of negative vibes. There has not been even ONE instance of any such feedback from anybody, that the new staff is not at the top of the game and doing their job - all through the past 7 weeks when they have been recruiting.

Here is what I saw at another site as what the mother of the 2015 national top-125 (Texas top-15) four-star player JW Ketchum said --

"Other people (recruits) need to come back and see Texas. It's different," she said. "I'm shocked at how different it was. I'm blown away. Strong and these coaches are going to turn this thing around. Get ready for them to win."

No need to worry. But we need to understand that this staff is no snake oil sales magicians in recruiting. They cannot (and would not want to) do what Mack used to do with junior days, that only Mack did in college football. That was good and bad and I was never convinced that it was the way to do it, anyway. This staff will do it like other universities. Work hard to evaluate players (and get evaluated by players) all the way till the signing day. Good for both in the end.

About 60 kids came in, 3 new offers made. One to 2015 classman Kirk Johnson (RB, San Jose, CA, Victory Christian), and two to 2016 classmen Collin Johnson (WR, same school as his brother) and Jared Mayden (CB, Sachse HS).

I think Charlie and his staff are doing their due diligence in evaluating and not just shotgunning-out offers to every kid that walks thru the door. It's still very early. They'll find the talent and get them to committ.

I read that the Johnson brothers' father went to UT. Does anyone know who that was? The article did not specifically say that the father was an athlete.

HornSwoggler, you really didn't know about Johnny Johnson? You must be young, then

... Glad that you learned of him though. Many consider him the best ever DB at DBU, or among the top 2 or 3, along with those like Jerry Grey.

He was before my time at Texas too (1985-90) but I still remember somebody in the stands next to me at the 1988 shellacking at DKR by Houston, yelling. "Hey, idiot, McWilliams, what are you doing playing man-to-man? You think you have a couple of Johnny Johnsons playing there?" ... That was when Heisman winner Andre Ware of Houston torched us for 66 points. I had to go and look up who this Johnny Johnson was.

His son Kirk Johnson (2015 recruit) is considered a low 4-star to high 3-star player, but the younger son Collin Johnson (2016 recruit) could end up as even a 5-star. That's what they say.

Johnny Johnson was THE MAN, what a player!

I've read some of the reports that his son was only at 60%, playing hurt much of last year, so the game tape from that time span is not indicative of his ability at full health. Sounds like he is a very underrated prospect.

Unfortunately, I am not that young!

I knew of Johnnie Johnson and was at UT when he played as a Fr and Soph. The first article I read did not indicate who the father was but just that he attended UT. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was none other than the stud that I knew of. I added the info to aid those much younger than I that may not know of him.

I was at UT mid-seventies and remember Johnny Johnson very well...and Ray Claiborne. Great players for Texas and in the NFL...
