We've been verrrrrrrry lucky. The SEC is way too good. Even the worst SEC teams could beat most major league teams. We'd be lucky to finish 13th in that conference every season.

I don't think this is just coincidence. I think it keys off of how we adjust to regional styles of play. The hitting heavy (or some might simply say pitching poor) conferences like the SEC and ACC have trouble adjusting to the much better quality pitching they see from us. In contrast our hitters go against better pitching all the time and fair quite well against the mediocre SEC/ACC pitching.

In contrast we always seem to have a hell of a time with the west coast teams like Stanford, Fullerton, LongBeach and even USanDiego. Again this seems related to their regional style of play focused on good pitching and defense which makes them much more similiar to us. Unlike when we play the SEC, our hitters are seeing pitching every bit as good as what they are used to in the Big12 (probably better) so they get no advantage, meanwhile the west coast team hitters are used to going against very good pitching and seem to hold their own against our pitching.

All of this leads me to believe that the SEC and ACC have historically been overvalued (At the very least since the changes to tone down the bats a few years ago). Their hitting isn't really that much or any better than other conferences, in fact the primary difference is that their pitching is worse. Conversely, I think west coast teams are undervalued when in fact it's their superior pitching that makes them look less impressive.
