Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.
Rebates often have hitches and don't come in. That's not a $40 hard drive, that's a $120 hard drive with a chance at it being a $40 hard drive in two or three months. Sometimes you have to call and ***** to get it (I recently had to do that with sprint for a $150 rebate.) Sometimes rebates just don't come in. I've learned just not to depend on mail in rebates. You can get a 160gb drive at newegg for $80 and not have to roll the dice with rebates.
Often, following the terms of the rebate just isn't enough. Some companies are better than other about it. I've sent in for rebates, followed the instructions and even photocopied the stuff I sent in for proof and have ended up having to fight on the phone to get rebates. Sometimes they still don't come. Just a month ago, I had to spend over an hour on the phone with Sprint to get a $150 rebate. At the end, they called it "their mistake." For a $20 rebate, it's not worth the effort to talk to 10 people on the phone to get the money back. Rebates are such a crapshoot that I suspect some companies intentionally do this.
Sometimes you can send away for a rebate and it will come without any hassle....but hassles are frequent enough that when you see something that costs $120 out-of-pocket and goes down to $40 after rebates, it's just not wise to consider it a $40 purchase until the rebates actually come back. Maybe the day will come when class action lawsuits or the government make sure mail in rebates are more than a crapshoot, but that day isn't now.
Works for me. I got this a month or so ago and the two rebates are in the process of being paid:
