SE Asia/Australia

I am currently in Indonesia for work, and when I leave I might have the chance to spend a few days doing some traveling before heading back to the states. I will have to buy my ticket to wherever I go, but the ticket from that destination back home will be covered.

so, where would you recommend me go and why? if i do this, it is only going to be 3 or 4 days max for money and other reasons.

do yall know anything about perth? or would you recommend the other coast? or cambodia, malaysia, stay in indonesia?

especially if money is a consideration, hit up SE Asia. You could hit the beach at Phuket, Kao Lak or Koh Samui. You could go to Bangkok or head over to Hanoi. If you want more mountainous terrain, Chiang Mai is great also.

Australia is very nice, but SE Asia is much more interesting, the beaches are as nice, if not nicer, the culture is exotic and the exchange rate can not be beat in most countries(save Singapore, HK or Japan).

What exactly do you want to do? Beaches/resorts, culture, nature, etc. Do you want touristy or off the beaten path type places?

You have all kinds of options, but you don't have enough time to fully do one country. For that reason, I wouldn't do Thailand or Vietnam since those require two weeks minimum, unless of course you just want to get drunk on the beach, in which case there are about 500 options.

With just 3 days, you can see most of what Cambodia has to offer, that is if you are into temples. Fly into Siem Reap and see Angkor Wat and all the other nearby temples. You can get the Visa upon arrival.

Guess that means you're there for work. I'm guessing off the coast of Java near Jakarta? Or if it's oil exploration I guess you're nearer Sumatra.

Nature........3 days......... after Cambodia, I'd do the island of Komodo, just east of Java. It's touristy enough so you can get in and out quickly. Ocean currents have completely isolated the island for millions of years, so you're going to find some very strange examples of evolution, including the Komodo dragon. Diving there is excellent as well.

Yeah, the Cambodia visa is like 20 bucks. It took 20 minutes to get it at the airport when I was there.

There's also the Indonesian version of Angkor Wat on Java, on the other side of the island from Jakarta. I forget what it's called. It's supposed to be just as amazing, but I've never been.

Chiang Mai is really interesting as far as nature stuff goes, but it'll take a while to get there as there's no direct flight. You'd have to catch a connection flight or bus from Bangkok. Since you have 3 days, that's probably not gonna work.

Laos is very underrated. A very peaceful, relaxing experience in the mountains. There's also hiking, rafting, and tubing (yes, Guadalupe River style tubing with beer and everything) down the Mekong. Visa for there is 50 bucks, but I think you need to get it a couple weeks in advance, so that's probably out.

You could always bum around Bangkok, Hanoi, Saigon (F Ho Chi Minh), Phnom Penh, or Singapore for a few days as well. There are some very cool day trips from Hanoi to see the outdoors.

Damn, you should stay longer than 3 days. Just typing this makes me want to go back to that part of the world. So yeah, I think if you went to say, Thailand, you wouldn't be satisfied with the trip because you'd just see one small part. But Cambodia IS Angkor Wat (and some jungles and a huge lake, but mostly Angkor Wat), so I'm sure you'd come away from there very satisfied with your short trip. It can easily be done in 3 days. Google some images to see if that would be something you'd like to see. There are about 20 other temples hidden in the surrounding jungles there as well that are just as, if not more interesting.

thanks for all the info so far.

if i were to go to australia, would yall suggest the perth side or the sydney side?
