I'm spending 4 days in Glasgow (business). I should have some free time. What is worth seeing? Is it worth it to take a day trip to Edinburgh if I can fit it in my schedule?

There was one previous thread on Scotland, but the focus was mainly on Edinburgh.

Seriously, take that trip to Edinburgh for a day. You won't regret it one bit. I spent a few days there last summer before going up and around Skye for a few weeks. Definitely one of my favorite cities in Europe...

I have spent very little time in Glasgow. It seemed more industrial than Edinburgh, but I've read that it has a pretty hopping arts & music scene, so it might be a lot of fun.

- Head north around Kyle of Locklash and have some of the best seafood.

- Hit the highlands and go tour a scotch distillery

- Edinburgh is fantastic.

- I haven't heard much of anything nice about Glasgow.

Since everyone is talking Edinburgh, what are some good places to eat there? Anyone been to Kitchin?

I was in St. Andrews last summer and not one Scottish person had anything good to say about Glasgow- they say it is not safe- lots of crime.

Loved the St. Andrews area- if you are a golf fan! Want to go back sometime to Scotland!

You could get a Britrail day pass, hop a train north to Inverness, south to Edinburgh, and then back over to Glasgow.

I love how a country about as big as the Metroplex can garner a question- Should I take a day trip to xxxxxx?

go to the castle in edinburgh. it is an absolutely amazing structure. i did not realize how important the city was until after i had taken the tour of the castle.

also, there is a huge scottish bar in edinburgh that is built from an old bank. i want to say it is called the bank draft but i may have it confused with a bar in another city. it might be the best bar i have ever been in.

The only noteworthy meal I had in Edinburgh was at an -- hold your laughter -- Italian restaurant. I can't remember the name, but it was on Leith Street, which joins Princes Street, one of the main thoroughfares through downtown, just down the hill and across the street from the train station. It was one of the best meals I've ever had, which makes no sense, but there you have it.

I've lived in Scotland (Aberdeen) for just over 3 years now, so PM if you have questions on anything besides Glasgow. I've been all over Scotland, but in my 3 years here I still haven't made it to Glasgow. It just doesn't appeal to me that much.

Depending on how much free time you have, I think you should try to decide if you want to be in a city or see some of the outdoors. If you want the city, take the train to Edinburgh. If you want the outdoors, there are plenty of places on the West Coast near Glasgow such as Loch Lomand, Glencoe, Oban, etc.

I supervised a rig on the Scotland-England border back in August (Gretna-Lockerbie area). The trip up to Edinburgh was the best part of the whole trip.

If you have even more time, I'd suggest popping down to the border area as well--very beautiful, rolling hills and very green.

Thanks guys. I found a 'Glaswegian' forum and they are giving me all sorts of advice. I plan to either take a day trip to Stirling or Edinburgh. Stirling is closer to Glasgow, has a beautiful castle, and I get to see the beautiful countryside. Edinburg sounds amazing, but I don't know if I would do it justice by just going for a few hours. Maybe I'm wrong.

My understanding is that Glasgow has the better food, shopping, nightlife, and museums. Even so, Edinburgh's inherent beauty still trumps everything Glasgow has to offer. It is obvious that tourists generally enjoy Edinburgh more. I guess it is like comparing Houston to Austin...

The only things you "have" to do in Edinburgh are spend are spend a little time at the castle and walk the Royal Mile. A few hours is enough, but you'll get the bug and want to go back for more. (I'm still waiting for the chance. I don't think I spent more than 24 hours in the city myself.)
