Fay closing FAU campus until Wednesday

The Florida Atlantic football team isn't really worried about the Longhorns right now.

That's because Tropical Storm Fay might wreak havoc on the school, which is closed until Wednesday.

The Owls did have time for a pre-storm scrimmage on Saturday. The defense allowed the offense to score on their first three possessions.

"I'm very concerned about the defense," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger told reporters. "I'm not as concerned about what the defense didn't do, I'm worried what they did do. And what they did do was do nothing."

"I thought there was some more leadership out there and there would be some people out there going crazy on defense; it didn't materialize."

Hmmm... Schnelly way have gone too far out on that ol' limb... I'm smelling a steer stampede of the mighty Owl defense

WorSTEER MAN

If the FAU game were a book its title would be "Come, Watch the Massacre".

I cannot get over his initial statement from last year.

"Advanced training is over, in 2008 we go to play Texas, and we're going there to win"!

Here is what he will be waving somewhere in the second quarter.

Page 276 of Phil Steele's says "...We're going there to win the game". No doubt you are correct in that's the right attitude for a coach to have. And no doubt he has done a marvelous job building that program from literally nothing fro 2001.

He is still a very good coach and his biggest accomplishment IMHO was beating Nebraska back in '84. He also was a OC on the undefeated Dolphin team of '72.

If he takes the Mack Brown approach to the OU job instead of breaking ties with their old hands and tradition, he might still be there.

Just having some pregame fun with my post and yes we better bring it or else.

Meh, talk is cheap. Until Schnelly has an epic drunken outburst involving a transvestite, a yak, and industrial solvents, color me uninterested. Can't wait for the game.

I'll be in the stands watching this jackass take his beat down with one memory I'll never forget.
9-25-93, I'd been living around the country for eight years, catching the Horns where I could. Flights to Austin and Dallas each year for a game or two. Great trips with family to Meadowlands and even a loss at Auburn under McWilliams was made bearable by their fans. A game vs Louiisville was a natural, living in Nashville at the time.
I loaded up the wife and boys for the drive arriving in time to tailgate in parking lot. Obiviously there were not many Texas fans cooking in an old baseball field parking lot but soon learned these were not type of opponent fans (except okies) I was used to dealing with. Of course now appriciate their proximity to Ohio, same rifraft.
That game, with no thanks to Mackovic, was simply the worst experience of my life, worst than going to Buffalo as a Cowboy fan.
The Louisville fans were horrible around us, ended up with security escorting my family over halftime to a new seats in front of Longhorn Band -game was over at half but we stayed on till the end.

August 30 Howie I will be sitting among a bunch of Texas fans watching your beat down, I'll be yellow dog alumni polite but I haven't forgot.

Hoops - hope you get your personal revenge Aug. 30th

Horn69 - your right, the larger DKR & VY will bring good karma!

A few facts to chew on, per Phil Steele:

The FAU Defense: in 2008 they have 8 starters returning. In 2007 the mighty Owl DL gave up an avg. of 4.9 YPC rushing, while the stellar DB's were ranked #80 vs. the pass. Read those stats again and lick your chops.

On the O side of the ball: the UT OL avgs. 310 lbs. vs, 273 for the visitors from Boca Raton.... me thinks those FAU DL kids will be worn out by the end of the TEXAS HOT 3rd quarter and you know they have little DL depth.

Let's not forget when Louisville beat down Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl, circa January 1, 1991.

Why does Howard get the blame for the actions of the fans?

He may be a bunch of things, but this man has alot of Skins on the wall.

I remember in the early 80's when Miami was a joke, they came out of the Abyss in 1983!!!!!

This opening game is an opening game that scares the biggimiies out of me!!!!

He is instilling that nothing to lose attitude in his boys!!!!

I know Mack and company are not taking them lightly!!!

Yogi-ism of the year:

"I'm very concerned about the defense," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger told reporters. "I'm not as concerned about what the defense didn't do, I'm worried what they did do. And what they did do was do nothing."

"My defense will get to a point where they will be mean, nasty and ornery ********"

Clearly Coach Schnelly said this before the scrimmage last Sat. where hs savaged his D for doing "nothing". So the mighty Owl defense has a long way to go and won't meet his ******** status until sometime in the distant future.

sniff, sniff... I smell a Longhorn rout Aug. 30th. One week from Sat. - I cannot wait!

The Link

Ted Hutton is relevant for one more week. He came on HF, introduced himself, and gave us a window into FAU. He's at least a good blogger IMO. Except for Emperor, Voice, etc.

Austin180 - thanks for sharing that blog.

If you read all of that, you will see:

1) Owl injuries are beginning to add up... starting LG Kevin Miller and C Nick Paris will very likely miss the UT game. The backup C Ryan Wischenefski has played some but is relatively inexperienced vs. the starter - not good for the guy who will call blocking plays against a veteran UT DL. Starting DE Robert St. Claire is out with a knee injury and starting LB Andre Clark is still slowed by knee surgery from the past so he sounded very doubtful. This is not good for a team that probably has limited experienced depth... especially going on the road vs. a talented opponent, on what will be a hot & tiring night for the starters.

2) Concern was expressed re: DE pass rush or lack thereof, especially with DE St. Claire out, the pass rush drops off.
