Okay so I've been trying to install the darn thing and I keep getting this error message. "the sbc yahoo servers are busy please try again later, to obtain your password"
I did on monday, and they said "your order is not finished yet" cause I kept getting the error "your modem is not trained". They said to wait until the 21st and it should be on. So I was like okay and then last night when I was installing it it gave me that server error message. If it doesn't work this evening I am going to call them back and ***** at them.
I can tell you exactly what it is...your modem is not "provisioned" in their billing system.
The billing system has the MAC addy of the modem listed, and it knows that is a valid modem.
But, if they are slow in the office, and have a ****** turnaround on installs, then it will not get a signal.
Due to current FCC regs, I can't say how much that sucks. Ooops, too late.
Had the same issue with the setup. Call them. Over the phone, they walked me through an "alternate" setup that bypassed some of the trouble. They are actually, very nice and friendly on the phone!
I've been happy with SBC DSL for almost two years now. I had TW cable before. Was cable noticably faster? Yes, at times. I also remember cable having outages every 60 days or so. I've only remember one so far with SBC.
If you live in Houston, this is your best deal: The Link
I've had Earthlink through a TW cable pipe for about 18 months, and its markedly faster and more stable than my old DSL. also, I've only had one outage, but it was for 12 hours.
For what it's worth, I also have Vonage as a work phone, and I depend on these for my home office, with a large amount of throughput on both.
Okay, I got up and running last night. Let me tell you how it went.
I tried to reinstall the thing and it kept getting stuck and giving me the same error message, so I called sbc. real nice girl, kinda sexy voice helps me out for a while. long story short, we tried about 4 different ways to get it to work, before she sent me up the ladder of expertise. She had me go into the start button (windows xp) and type cmd into the run area. then we started to type PING and some numbers and then PING and a web address.
well after she couldn't get anything to work, she passes me over to someone higher up. This guy gets on and says "okay close everything out" which I did. Then he has me open network connections in the control panel and read to him what is there. Long story short.....he changed one button in one of the things and the dsl just started to work.
He took like maybe five minutes to fix it. And let me tell you this DSL is flying. It's awesome, all in all I liked the support of SBC, the sexy voice girl made the call worthwhile.
Awhile back, I spoke to a tech in what I would assume/hope was level I support and they hadn't the foggiest idea what traceroute was. Hung up and called right back to get someone else.
My SBC contract is up , so I'm switching back to a cablemodem. Lately, the DSL line has been pretty solid, but I've had some pretty bad downtime (up to a day and a half) in the past. Hard to argue with $35 for 1.5/256 though.
