......and was entertained, because this is a true story about a real American hero.
The Link
This is a visceral and brutal, inspiring, sensitive, well-photographed tribute to an extraordinary man which turns out to be a serviceable, but rather ordinary movie, directed by Angelina Jolie from a screenplay by the Coen Brothers and others.
It reminds at times of "Chariots of Fire," "Life of Pi" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai," but IMO this film doesn't add much which hasn't been seen before (and repetitively) by experienced movie goers.
If you haven't seen many movies like these or if you want to see another one, this flick will serve those purposes very nicely.
I thought a better movie could have been realized from this story.
However, IMHO this one came up a bit short, lacking enough visual redemption and/or cinematic fulfillment at the end, after all the vividly portrayed hardship and sadism.
For me, those few closing sentences written on the screen as a conclusion didn't provide enough denouement nor give this stirring saga sufficient resolution.
If you liked it better than me, that's cool.
