...... via NETFLIX and discovered an unbeknownst (to me) gem of a poignant, coming-of-age comedy.

For me, I'll rank this entertaining flick right up there with such as "Stand By Me," "Dead Poets Society," "Dazed and Confused," "Almost Famous," "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and also to include recent and classic movies of this genre (just because I can): both "Mud" and "Cinema Paradiso."
Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell each effectively play against their usual type, while Allison Janney helps provide comedy and Toni Collette adds to the poignancy.
Young Liam James does most of the the growing up in this well-written story, while Maya Rudolph and Amanda Peet are both good too.
IMHO, a well-directed, talented ensemble cast delivers here a nicely portrayed film for your enjoyment.
Subtle/clever/unexpected humor abounds in this screenplay.
For example, Mr. Mister's "Kyrie Eleison" is misquoted by a character in this film as hilariously as Jimi Henrix's "'Scuse me, while I kiss the sky," Bruce Springsteen/Manfred Mann's "Revved up like a duece, another runner in the night" or John Fogerty's "There's a bad moon on the rise" often were.
Heck, I, myself, didn't know what a "holy enfanso" was, whenever I sang "Silent Night," until as a young teenager I saw that lyric actually written out.
I won't be surprised if some of these film makers get Oscar nominations.
No offensive acts of sex or violence.
Quirky, but believable, understated and heartfelt, I'll recommend this one as a good home rental for anyone interested, who missed seeing it in a theater.
Anyone seen it?
