I enjoy Greek/Roman historical stuff, so this one had that going for it.
There were plenty of good, even spectacular CGI views of of Pompeii, the city, and Vesuvius, the eruption.
I thought "Gladiator" needed more and longer CGI shots of Rome, the Forum and the Coliseum like this film had of Pompeii.
I dig Roman history and watch all the TV shows about it.
The love story here was about the erotic level of the one in "Twilight, IMHO.
Of course, this Romeo and Juliet type romance was also very much like the one in "Titanic" in that there was a tragic time limit here too.
No sex or nudity at all was depicted and I really enjoyed seeing all that stuff in the TV series version of "Spartacus" a lot.
The fight scenes were OK in "Pompeii," but, with credit due given for all the good stuff in this flick, here the sexual and political intrigue, the depth of the characters and the development of the storyline were all sorely lacking, if compared to TV's "Spartacus."
Of course this was a single movie whereas "Spartacus" had a couple or three seasons to pace and develop its drama.
With a better script and, for me, some sex, this movie could have been great, IMO.
But, just as in the actual 79 A.D. disaster, along with the eruptive and pyroclastic events and earthquakes followed by a tsunami, there were tons and tons and tons of ash left to dig through.
Surviving Romans didn't bother doing that digging and IMHO many to most moviegoers won't find this disastrous flick worth their while either.
I wonder if any current moviegoers in Naples, Italy will take a hint and move to a safer place.
So, I'll give the movie credit for its realism concerning Mother Nature's power, but would mark off heavily for much of the very cliched rest.
Recommended only for those who really want/need to see it, as did I.
Anyone?
