..... via NETFLIX and found it to be a mediocre movie with great music and a promising premise, but a delivery that was a bit too over the top, yet dull, for me.
My dear wife liked it better.
The Link
Kind of a comedic mashup of "Good Morning Vietnam" with "Titanic" and the timely rescue of the British troops trapped at Dunkirk by sea.
I was disappointed, but this farce was true to the British tradition of older fare from across the pond like "Carry On, Captain," "Carry On, Doctor" or "Carry On, Nurse."
Better modern movies utilizing and updating this vibe, IMHO, would include "The Full Monty," either one of the Austin Powers shag fests or even "The Commitments."
Imagine, if you can, the much better movie "Boogie Nights" taking place on a '60s pirate radio ship anchored off the English coast, instead of being set in the San Fernando Valley suburban home where Burt Reynolds films his sex flicks, and with horny, misfit disc jockeys on board broadcasting outlawed rock music, rather than stereotypical porn stars at work and play.
For me, it offered lackluster acting and mostly silly or slap stick humor with barely enough sex or raunchiness to deserve its R rating.
This was like "WKRP in Cincinnati," but with less interesting characters, a less engaging story and far less humor.
Or maybe a madcap movie such as "Nashville" without Robert Altman's moviemaking mastery to meld it all together.
I found less and less to chuckle at as this flick floated on and ultimately sank, but the 'music the radio station played and the 1960's clothes were cool.
Of course, I already knew that from memory.
I recommend you buy the soundtrack, if you dig the music; but skip this movie unless you think primetime reruns of "The Monkees" would go over really big on TV now.
I kept thinking how grateful I am that Beatles' movies showing the same time period, like "A Hard Day's Night" which was brilliantly directed by Richard Lester, are much more fun and far more insightful, even when viewed today, than this completely lightweight flick.
I just hope my review disparaging "Pirate Radio" won't mean a movie about outlaw radio station XERF in Cuidad Acuna, starring Keanu Reeves as Dr. Brinkley the greedy goat gland surgeon and Tom Cruise as DJ Wolfman Jack, isn't in our cinematic future.
Could be a blockbuster!!!
