......starring Katherine Heigl via NETFLIX.
My wife and I saw a preview earlier this year during its theatrical release.
She said she'd read and enjoyed 17 of Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" novels, so I put the movie in our queue.
The Link
We both thought it was pretty good.
Sort of like "The Rockford Files" meets "Jersey Shore," but told from a female point of view.
It's a story about a Trenton, New Jersey chick bounty hunter or, as Plum says "a bail recovery agent," learning that trade.
It was often funny and pretty saucy, but the lack of female nudity in any of many readily available places kept it from being over the top for me.
I enjoyed it, however, it could be shown on prime time TV with kids watching, without editing at all.
My wife said Heigl was very good in her role, but perhaps was miscast according to her prior visualization of the character.
Since I hadn't read the books, I didn't have this problem.
Pithy and timely narration by Heigl moved the action along and set the vibe nicely, providing helpful background info and insight, elevating the whole flick by explaining Plum's backstory and giving her thoughts, IMO.
Not counting the action, half the interesting stuff came from the dialog and another half from Plum's narrated thoughts.
So, I'll give the screenwriting here a big thumbs up and I found this film better than "The Bounty Hunter" with Jennifer Anniston or other flicks in the female action/comedy genre going way back to "Jackie Brown" with Pam Grier.
Debbie Reynolds as Plum's grandmother was very good in a supporting role as were others cast in this flick.
"Kill Bill" certainly had more on screen action in its Parts 1 and 2, but I thought "One For The Money" boasted more soul, humor and true grit, plus a believable main character.
Perhaps sequels could even have the staying power for several movies, since about 20 novels are published in the series.
However, I think a different emphasis or direction could have made this one a better movie and, perhaps, a bigger hit.
More skin and sex was exactly what this flick needed to keep my interest at a higher level, while waiting for Aggie football season to begin tomorrow afternoon.
It's a fun, fairly exciting and an entertaining movie to rent, IMO.
But it could have been much, much, much better, at least for me, had it been made with content racy enough to get an R rating instead of a PG-13.
