Saw Milk

Sean Penn is surely among the elite half dozen actors of the day. Without his performance, this movie is maybe a yawner.

The movie concentrates too much on all of his attempts to get elected and his major struggle against prop 6 once he is elected. I would have liked to see more of his relationship with Mayor Moscone and the people in his life. The movie often felt a little more documentary than I like in a historical piece.

One note: I'm old enough to remember the Milk killing (it's in the front of the movie that he is shot and killed, so that isn't a spoiler). It's possible that people unfamiliar with the events may see the movie differently.

Final verdict: Great performance by Penn, flawed movie design by the writer and/or director. Worth seeing, not great. My guess is that it got an Oscar nomination for best picture because of the subject matter. Kind of like Philadelphia, it's a movie that's supposed to be good for you.

Sean Penn's performance was amazing in Milk.

Of equal brilliance is the Penn/Colbert "Metaphor-Off"

The Link

Sean Penn is a great actor and the guy in that movie that played the Green Goblin Jr is ok too. But when they started kissing I had to turn it off.

I thought he was good in "Milk," but I didn't find the movie particularly memorable.

I liked "All the King's Men" better, wherein he played a Louisiana politician, modeled on Gov. Huey Long.

I enjoy Penn's movies and rarely learn about other aspects of his life except on BBs.

So, by my choice, I'm unburdened by his personal life or views.

When Sean won the Oscar for Best Actor of 2003 for "Mystic River," instead of Bill Murray, I wasn't surprised but I did have this thought:

Sean Penn will likely get many roles that show off his generally intense, Brandoesque, brooding style of acting.

But Bill Murray will perhaps never get a better role for his often intimate thespian stylings or a better Oscar opportunity than he had in "Lost in Translation."

So it goes.

The Oscars are awarded in less than a week and I'm still trying to see all the nominated films and performances.

As a lifelong movie fan, I remain interested in these particular film awards.
