Saw 'Lone Survivor'

I liked it a lot.

It was a pretty good popcorn movie. But I think they either left a lot out and or changed a lot which I found odd with Luttrell playing such a significant part in making the movie.

I saw it a week ago. To nitpick, it starts off a little slow, but more than makes up for it in the last two-thirds or last half of the film. Definitely worth the price of a ticket plus a medium popcorn and a large Coke Classic (which, at theaters nowadays, ain't cheap).

My take-away lesson from the movie is this: whatever the hell they are paying Navy SEALs, it ain't enough.

Explosions In the Sky (no pun intended) scored the movie also.

Superb movie. If this came out before Black Hawk Down, people would be putting this up there with one of the greatest war movies of the last 20 years. But today's audiences are now used to the gory ultra realistic depiction of modern close combat...something that they weren't when BHD came out.

Some of my takeaways:
1) It makes us never want to send our boys into war. That's something that all good war movies that realistically portrays combat do.

2) However, it also shows there are things worth fighting for. These things are both practical, e.g. the termination of a Taliban leader to save the lives of others, and abstract, e.g. honor and dare I say glory. I'm not talking about Henry V stuff, those times are long gone, but fighting in Luttrell's case his hardest representing the honor of the US, Texas, the Navy, the SEALs, and this shipmates in his squad against evil. The Taliban deserved every bit ordnance that came their way. The family and village that took him in...perfect foil to the Taliban.

3) You can get a good arabian horse for far less than $15k, Peter Berg got that part wrong.
