Saw Kottke last night

He's great, I saw him in berkely opening up for Lovett. Modest Lyle thought he should have been the headliner and I concurred.

He has this odd demeanor that reminds me of my mechanical engineer father. It's not at all typical for an artist, I think. The last time I saw him at the Paramount he told a story about how the directors of the theater were amazed that they would pick him up at the airport, he would play sound check, go back to the hotel, then come to the theater and play the show, and he would wear the same shirt all day. They had never seen anyone do that.

He talked a lot about travel and weight-to-power ratios. He had two guitars, a 6- and a 12-string, but whichever one he wasn't playing he just laid on the stage . . . didn't want to bother to carry around a guitar stand (which are pretty small, btw).

And his stories between songs are hilarious.

Very odd brain and an unmitigated musical genius.

So sorryin Anchroage with John Prine about 1981. He was past his popularity and just a cult guy even then.

There has not been an imitator in all this time.
