Saw "Jurassic World"......

….. with three of my grandkids and I’ll give it a C+ to a B- for very good dinosaur action and acceptable acting, but it had a completely derivative story.

My guests liked it fine and I was well entertained.

And I believe most moviegoers will feel the same.

Lots of great reptilian action with noticeably more visceral gore than I’d expected, but really it’s a very formulaic addition to this movie series.

This will doubtlessly please franchise fans, just as it should, and that’s completely cool; however nothing new, except some different dinosaurs, is offered, if that even matters.

I’d rank the first Jurassic movie as being as the best of the series for me, followed by either II or this one and then III in that order.

I could have waited for the video myself, except for wanting to take my very eager grandchildren.

Your thoughts?

This is exactly what I expected. I too think the first was best and they all declined after that but I still love these movies. All I want is to be entertained in these as I already get and agree with the leave nature alone type message. Thanks. I will likely see it early next week when theaters die down a little bit.

Saw it on Friday in 3-D. Theatre was only half full. Was well filmed and the action was good. None of the characters were particularly endearing. OP's grade of B-/C+ is spot on.

I too came away wondering why so many high ratings and praises. I agree C+/B- is right on. Technical stuff was pretty cool, but the acting I thought was mediocre at best. I looked at my watch three times which is never a good sign for me.

It was fun. Almost all of the people who deserved to be mauled on were mauled so that was satisfying. I totally see where they leave it open for another one. That dude needs a mauling too. By that dude I mean the dude I won't get into so as to not spoil anything.

THE PART WITH NO SPOILERS:

I was glad to see it in theater, but unlike Godzilla, it was not worth paying extra for "IMAX" and "3D" which added virtually nothing.

Worthy successor to the original. The "raptor training" stuff which looked so hokie in the trailers actually was pretty well done. Most of the plot developments were predictable, the characters were all cliché, although not horribly so in either case. The designated good guys / writer surrogate viewpoint characters tended to beat the audience over the head with the moral of the story way too much.

The dinosaurs continue to be as "realistic" and lifelike as possible. Only one bit of CGI was poorly done and it just involved a person falling so no biggie there. The dinosaur action scenes were friggin amazing. Some plotholes involving the inability to prevent disaster from unfolding, which will bother some and others won't care.

WARNING: THE PART WITH SPOILERS:

Great way to bring back the T-Rex at the end, finally we got to see two of the top dogs fight it out. Excellent. The shot of the T-Rex climbing up the roof of the building at the end was pretty epic as well. I still can't believe though, that after four movies they have yet to show a fight of an apex predator taking on a giant sauropod. Such a missed moment of potential awesomeness to have it happen offscreen and imply it was an easy curbstomp battle.

This probably shouldn't have bothered me too much, but it took me a bit to get over how ridiculous it was for that dude to get thrown through the air and then fall about 20 feet to the ground and land on his back and head, and then get right up with no injuries at all and without really even being dazed.

I really thought the hybrid dinosaur thing would be dumb, but they pulled it off pretty well, although some of the "it's intelligent" stuff were a bit unbelievable for anything short of a human, especially given how we had it hammered into our heads that this thing knew nothing of the world but it's own enclosure - yet it understands how the park's control center uses thermal technology and GPS tracking and even knew when they were using which method to determine her location. Also how was it supposed to communicate with the raptors? I don't care if they share some dna, it never was taught any communication skills by anyone.

I can't be the only one who thinks the "the public wants newer, bigger, scarier stuff - dinosaurs were a big deal when we first opened but are becoming mundane now" plot was an allegory to the franchise itself trying to stay relevant with more than just "we do a good job making lifelike dinosaurs in our movies".

SPOILER DISCUSSION NOW

I saw the mystery of what other Dino was merged into the new one a mile away. Hmm, what could they possibly have included in the DNA to make it really smart and cunning? Hmmm. Maybe because it even sounds like a Raptor? That bugged me a bit because it was so obvious. I love Raptors and am glad that one teamed up with the T-Rex to help in the take down. The way they looked at one another and then parted ways was kinda cool. "Blue" turned out to be true.

I don't buy into the 3D stuff at all and avoid it all the time now. To me it's just distracting and it seems the studios purposely dream up things not needed or go over the top to put stuff in films for the effect. That's like wearing Mr. T necklaces when you just need one. But I am sure I am in the minority.

Note: Don't foolishly buy a ticket to one of the idiotic matinee's at the Alamo Drafthouse (I still love that place, this was my fault) that allow kids. And btw, who the hades brings infants to kids the age of about 5 or so to Jurassic Park? Those kids were mortified and rightly so. I signed up for it but still, if I wanted to go hear kids and people talk I would go back to a Tinseltown or some inferior theater set up like that. Don't do it.

Saw it Tuesday night with the fam. It was ok. I liked the Life of Pi actor.

By the way, we have a Spoiler thing here next to the video thing, so you can hide stuff.

I may be just a mere layman, but couldn't the video thing or thingy, be called an icon?

It is written that a "serpent" will tempt them and "spoil" their bliss in the Eden of Hornfans.

It's mostly faux-3D anyway. Unless the movie was filmed in 3D, it shouldn't count. Having it be the normal movie with maybe 3 scenes where something appears to pop out of the screen, isn't really "watching a movie in 3D". I wouldn't have paid extra for the pseudo-3D in this one but my friends insisted.
