......starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
The Link
Spoilers ahead!
In this near future, sci fi, cinematic offering, Earth has been invaded by unknown, unstoppable, unbeatable aliens.
There is actually no hope.
Cruise's uncharacteristically (for him) antiheroic character is unceremoniously dumped into an unexpected (again for him) suicide mission.
Unwilling, untrained and unprepared, he is dropped onto a battle beach and, understandably, he dies there in under five minutes.
However, in an unexplained twist (which is kind of explained later), Tom is unsettlingly caught in a time loop, that gives him an undeserved, second and third and fourth and so on and on, chance at life.
All this unlikely premise is initially unbeknownst to him.
Think of "Saving Private Ryan" combined with "Groundhog Day."
As this unusual, confusing and continuing life/death/life/death/life/death reboot unfolds, unequivocally, unannounced and unhaltingly, Cruise gets undeniably better at fighting the still unrelenting, uncaring aliens with the unfailing help of Emily Blunt.
And, thus, he lives a little longer each time.
And he learns a little more.
Some very welcome humor, no darn sex at all, plenty of wartime violence with little visible blood and/or guts and lots and lots and lots and lots of depicted redundancy.
However, this action adventure flick is well-written and nicely portrayed within its particular, self-imposed, screenplay boundaries and, IMHO, "Edge of Tomorrow" presents and manifests itself OK as an exciting, summertime, "popcorn" movie.
This film is fairly original, fast-moving, quite entertaining and, yes, even believable, after you suspend your disbelief.
Especially recommended for Tom Cruise in a time loop fans.
It's much like his "Mission: Impossible" movies.
Except, instead of us seeing miraculous escape after miraculous escape, here Cruise keeps dying and coming back.
Just like a cheap Timex, in this flick, Tom "takes a licking and keeps on ticking."
Anybody seen it?
