......, a very interesting soft core pornographic dramedy featuring both a decent plot and a different point of view, written and directed by and also starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt along with Scarlett Johannson, Juilanne Moore and Tony Danza.
I liked it a lot.
The Link
It's a flick about a New Joisey based, at times almost Brandoesque, Lothario who's obsessed with porn, so if any of that's gonna be a turn off you'd better stay away.
This guy enjoys masturbating to INTERNET porn even more than doing the real, live, wild thing, although he's pulling plenty of that also.
If porn addiction or sport f***ing isn't a deal breaker for you (it turned out to be a plus for me), you can expect an entertaining relationship/personal growth movie not too much unlike "Saturday Night Fever," except here all that disco music and fancy dancing is replaced by tastefully explicit, "R" rated, sex.
Lots of "A," some "T" and plenty of descriptive language, but no on screen penetration and no money shots.
If you saw "Friends With Benefits" or "Boogie Nights," this sexual cinematic offering really goes no further.....just more often.
FWIW, I found this well-made, stylish film as insightful and as true to life as "(100) Days of Summer," "Annie Hall," "High Fidelity" and/or "The Break Up."
And I was favorably reminded of Woody Allen's movies (another plus for me) by the storytelling here, the introspection, the depreciating humor alternating with self-aggrandizement, plus good (if stereotypical) character development.
IMO, a solid writing and directorial debut, which fleshes out a challenging and usually taboo premise, from Gordon-Levett.
I'll even advocate JGL playing JFF, whenever that biopic gets made, because, IMHO, he's an evermore emerging Hollywood mover and shaker who has paid attention, learned some of life's lessons and knows how to screenwrite and make a movie.
Levitt's probably not too old to play Johnny Manziel; he's certainly got some moves and the right twinkle in his eye.
I see that potentially as a big blockbuster flick.
And, in yet another possible film offering, Matthew McConaughey could portray the great James Street on the LHN.
RIP.
I thought that, perhaps, this film's storyline shifted a bit too abruptly with a less than likely rebound at the end, but I was needing to take a leak pretty badly by that time, anyway, and, afterward, I finally walked out, satisfied and thinking, "Hey, why not?"
Your thoughts?
