It answers the question "What if Streetcar Named Desire was written by a mature Jew instead of a hysterical gay?" I actually like this one better. Its emphasis is on status anxiety of rich people in freefall instead of just inherent goofiness.
Kate Blanchett is excellent, as you would expect, but the actor playing the sister is very good as well and gets a good amount of screen time. Allen writes good female roles as usual.
Surprisingly, at least to me, are the good performances from Andrew Dice Clay as the sister's ex and Louis CK as her interlude. And Bobby Carnavale (sp?) as the sister's boyfriend is also very good.
Alec Baldwin is Alec Baldwin.
San Francisco looks beautiful and Allen's cinematographer takes advantage of it.
I was expecting a dramatic farce and there were some farcical elements but for the first time I actually enjoyed an Allen film that was more serious than just comic
