....and really liked it.

Directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei, Amy Ryan, Rosemary Harris and Albert Finney.

Made by a master director with a great cast, I think this movie is as good as they write 'em, act 'em and make 'em and I certainly recommend it.

Another fairly recent movie that I found similarly emotionally compelling and as interestingly raw as this one is "Once Were Warriors," which I also recommend.

The story in each these films builds up, so be patient while that happens because the payoffs are worth it.

There's enough good acting, action, sex and suspense to entertain you until things amp up with ever increasing rapidity.

In the commentary Lumet explains that "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is neither a thriller nor a caper flick, although elements of those genres are there.

It's actually a melodrama, so learn as I did what that means and what that genre really is.

Soap operas are usually overacted melodramas; this flick, however, is a well done melodrama with a good script, fine acting, nice cinematography and superb direction

In a drama that's a crime thriller or caper flick, as Lumet explains, the characters determine the story.

In a melodrama, the story determines the characters.

And the heightened drama in a melodrama is theatrical in a good way.

So a movie melodrama like this one is a modern example of Greek tragedy, wherein the characters can't see what the gods or fate have in store and can't escape once they're caught up in it.

Check either of these films out unless you require happy endings.

It's at the top of my Netflix queue and should ship tomorrow. Sounds like my type of film and I'm looking forward to it.

Marisa is a fine actress and she's really hot.

I wish she had more good movies to view her body at work in her body of work.

Her cinematic coital collaboration with a pudgy doughboy like Hoffman didn't upset me a bit, in fact I thought it was a great way to kick start the movie and even more so in retrospect.

I thought I could see less of Seymour than the lovely Marisa or maybe that was just selective focus on my part.

Now, if Kathy Bates and Jack Nicholson had caused a tsunami in that hot tub scene in "About Schmidt" that would have bothered me.

I liked it. I agree the opening scene is unexpected, but I'll take PSH on Marisa Tomei over Albert Finney laying the wood to Rosemary Harris. You know, if I got to pick one of them.

I watched this yesterday, really enjoyed the film.

Hawke was very good in this one.

He gets on my nerves with the whole poet/novelist bit, but in Training Day and this, he proves he is one of the best young actors out there.

The movie reminded me of a 1970's hardboiled thriller full of deceit and twists.

Directed and edited very well.

I watched it on neflix in demand on Friday. I watched about 30min and stopped it. It was just too depressing and I thought I could find a better thing to watch on there. What they were doing, wow. No thanks.

Here's the review I posted several years ago of "Once Were Warriors."

Saw this as a Netflix rental and thought it was the best movie I've seen anywhere since I watched "Crash" in a theater.

Think of "Whale Rider," another excellent film about the lives of modern Maori tribes people in New Zealand, meeting the tragedy of Tennessee Williams, on steroids.

This flick has excellent acting and I found the story riveting.

IMHO, all the performances are nothing less than amazing and the range of emotions portrayed is complete in its scope.

It's a very powerful movie.

Just don't expect a happy ending.

I thought it rivaled "City of God" as an illuminating look into another culture and the human condition.

It's that Ethan Hawke still looks like he is 23.

As a freak of all things New Zealand, I also would recommed One Were Warriors. Although it is a side of New Zealand the tourist board would rather not have you see.

And dude, i would not want to get on the bad side of the character Temuera Morrison plays. There was some serious scary intensity in his acting in that movie.

Strong graphic sexuality, nudity, drug use, violence.....all the necessary food groups seem to be present. Queued it up and looking forward to seeing it.

The scene at the heroin dealer's apartment made me fell lke I needed a shower. This movie was depressing, but not all very good movies end with a happy dance number. It's a pretty good flic.
