and recommend it. Several friends told me it was very good, it got very good reviews.

Affleck directed and starred and he and Clooney produced it.

I always admire a thriller where you know what the outcome is from the start.

I was not familiar with the story but it revolves around the Iranian radicals seizing our Tehran embassy in 79 and holding the hostages. Six US embassy staffers got away to the Canadian embassy and were secreted out of the country with some trickery. That is the story.

You already knew they got out and it is gripping anyway.

Sterling performances by Affleck, John Goodman and Alan Arkin, who I thought was dead. Certainly looks close to it but still a wonderful comic actor.

A bunch of the people who play the various Iranians, good guys and bad, are very effective, especially one of the baddies near the end at the airport.

This movie deserves a good audience. And stay for the credits, there is a surprise.

Agree: Terrific movie.
Also, it's good to remember what hair styles, clothes and cars looked like in the late 70s and early 80s. Makes me glad I no longer live in the days of leisure suits and long sideburns.

Great flick.

Kind of depressing at the end as that one character fled Iran and it shows that character entering Iraq while the customs agent says "Welcome to the Republic of Iraq" as if it was a good thing - it was months before Iraq and Iran went to war with one another. What a mess that area of the world is.

dunno if the character even existed, but assuming she did, I expect the Canadians sent her through Iraq to get to Canada. She couldn't just get on a flight to Ontario and Iraq was the easy route out of the country unless she wanted to go through Afghanistan.

Ben Affleck has certainly found his calling as a director. I've loved his previous two movies so far with "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Town". Argo was a awesome political thriller. I can't believe this was based on a true story despite the fact it was the Canadians who pulled this caper off and not so much the CIA and Mendez for that matter. Worth the watch though. Loved it!

It was not until the end that I realized the character's name was Antonio Mendes; Affleck is a good actor but only the beard kept him from being laughable as a hispanic from Nevada.

Enjoyed it a lot. Great story. Nice period piece where an effort at authenticity was made.

I was able to use the great line from it the other day when someone made the mistake of saying "Ergo" out loud.

The one thing that bugged me during the show and still bugs me is that the writers chose to let Carter off way too easy. They laid out some historical reference at the start of the movie, but then completely failed to follow up during the moment. It was almost as if Carter had nothing to do with it. I would have slammed the slimy fokker.
