IMHO, the Holy Trinity of greatest sports movies, Raging Bull, Rocky, and Bull Durham now has a 4th seat at the table.
Directing - Equal to Ron Howard's Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13
Cinematography - Incredible...period art direction and costumes + in the car/racing photography is nothing like we've seen
Acting - Oscar worthy (especially Daniel Bruhl as Niki Lauda)
Entertainment value - Uhhh yeah...Olivia Wilde and Lauda's wife are stunning, great racing action, smart humor.
Story - Let's say you don't care about racing or formula 1...you'll still care about the characters and their lives and be stunned by the photography. If you're Mandingo...you'll probably watch it a couple of times in the theater.
Right now, I'd have to put this up there with Mud and The Place Beyond The Pines as best of 2013 Oscars so far.
As an aside, this might sound ridiculous, but the approach Ron Howard took with Rush would be perfect for a Top Gun sequel.
