Saudi Arabia

I am heading to Jeddah for work at the end of February and should be there around 3 weeks or so. Anybody ever been to that area of Saudi or just Saudi in general.

Any experiences or tips and whatnot is much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

havent been to saudi but have lived in the area for 10+ years. Main things I hear are just how backwards it is. Enjoy some schwarmas and good arabic food while you are there, because that is about all you can look forward to.

i lived in saudi about 15 years ago. Really not much to do..maybe go on a camel ride. Shawarmas are really good. Also try out the Broasted chicken. No, thats not a typo. It is broasted. It comes with kubbus (bread) and garlic dip which is good.

Not much to do in Jeddah (or anywhere in that country.) Be sure you have a multiple entry and exit visa and spend the weekends in either Bahrain or Dubai.

Try heading up to the mountains in the Asir region -> not too far south of Jeddah. Do some hiking, and go see the monkeys which are indigenous to the area. Also, try snorkeling in coral reef and check out the barracuda. While you're at it, go for a drive up the coast.

I'm curious, too... may be heading to Al Khobar and Dammam in a few months, albeit for a shorter visit. Will probably stop in Dubai on the way or back now that Emirares has a flight from Houston.

Dubai is fun, if you know people or know of the places to go. It is hard to do that city not knowing the things to do there. Either way, in Saudi or dubai, hit up sand duning or wadi bashing....at least in Dubai tourist companies will offer that

at least i have schwarma to look forward too.

i will most likely fly back through Dubai and spend a day or 2 there. i am really looking forward to this experience. it is always nice to leave the country for a few weeks.

i just got back from a trip 3 weeks ago, and cant wait for my next one...but who knows when it will be....im tired of sitting behind a desk

I presume Saudi Arabia has a lot of migrant labor from India like the other Gulf states do? If so, they might have ethnic neighborhoods with some cool Indian culture and food. They're probably not on the official tourism list so you'd have to ask a local where they are.

Like the one poster said.. do what rich Saudi's so on the weekends and go to the UAE.
Saudi is not a very safe place these days for Americans, I am surprised your company is not providing detail for you.
Might want to ask them about traveling outside of your compound.

there are large populations of migrant workers there, but there wont be an indian area, maybe an area with some indian restaurants (or quite a few) but it wont be anything like a chinatown in the US

Saudi isnt really that dangerous if you dont go to certain areas, in general, it wont be a problem
