Good dramatized documentary (of sorts). Really good casting. The tension is there from the start, and you're cheering for Lorne Michaels to pull it off as the NBC Network corporate guys almost nix the show time-after-time until the last second.

Spoiler immediately below

I think it was the rolling-on-the-floor laughter of the execs as Garrett Morris sang: "I'm gonna get me a shotgun and kill all the Whiteys" in his trained operatic voice over and over minutes before the show went on air that swayed NBC to go live. Morris saved the franchise.

End of Spoiler

I've heard that plenty of actors disliked Chevy Chase, but I didn't realize just how bad it really was. I find him funny, in his movies, on early SNL, and in this show.

Milton Berle wouldn't last long in show business in the Me Too era....... I guess he'd have to be a porn star or something.

Here's the actual first episode in full:

Especially funny: Belushi, Chevy Chase, Ackroyd, Andy Kaufman

Also, I didn't know jack squat about Janice Ian, but she sang some sad folk songs powerfully that night.

I always thought “being last picked for basketball “ was a truly sad line.
She conveyed it - sad, sad, sad -- the life the lonely live. It could be anywhere from 1/5 to 1/2 of the people out there. Depending on the high school social setting, you could either find your niche, not care about what others thought about you (easier to do as an adult), be fortunate to be one of the "winners", or feel like some sort of outcast.

I've long said, for every weird girl, there's some weird dude out there, for every nerd girl, there's some nerd guy out there, for every ________ girl, there's a __________ guy out there, etc. But some don't seem to ever find that person to love. The level of sadness Ms. Ian conveys is reminiscent of George Jones or Townes Van Zandt at their deepest.

How did I miss this musical and lyrical genius for all these years...?
Nashville certainly doesn't make songs this sad. And she followed it up with another one near the end of the show "In the Winter":

The days are okay
I watch the TV in the afternoons
If I get lonely,
The sound of other voices,
Other rooms are near to me
I'm not afraid
The operator,
She tells the time,
It's good for a laugh
There's always radio,
And for a dime I can
Talk to God - Dial-a-Prayer
Are you there?
Do you care?
Are you there?

And in the winter,
Extra blankets for the cold
Fix the heater, getting old
I am wiser now, you know

And still as big a fool concerning you
I met your friend
She's very nice, what can I say?
It was an accident
I never dreamed we'd meet again this way
You're looking well
I'm not afraid
You have a lovely home
Just like a picture.
No, I live alone
I found it easier
You must remember how
I never liked the party life
Up all night
Lovely wife
You have a lovely wife

And in the winter
Extra blankets for the cold
Fix the heater, getting old
You are with her now, I know

I'll live alone forever
Not together now

Crazy perhaps but I always felt the “girls of the 60’s” song was sad. KT Lang maybe? Guess because I lived through those time periods.

If I was old enough to go to a Led Zeppelin concert, I would've been there.

Saw the Stones live, but they were playing through their geriatric years.
