seriously y'all; I know you put a bunch of fruit in 2 bottles of cheap red or merlot. Did that. Tasted exactly like you would think that would. I was looking for an expert's advice. Doesn't anyone make a nice festive pitcher of sangria w/o it turning into trashcan punch (like mine did on a smaller scale).
This isnt real sangria but our festive version for games was to use the large bottles of red wine, mix in a bunch of limes, lemons, orange, and apple. Then add 1 part of fresca for every 3 parts of wine, a dab of sprite and a little vodka for taste. it tastes real good going down, not so good the next day.
I make an incredibly inexpensive, and very good Sangria.
One large bottle of Riunite, (On ice, it's nice!) This is good wine for this because a) It's cheap, and b) it's already fruity.
Double handful of fruit, strawberries, oranges, cherries, peaches, pears, kiwi, watermelon, etc., etc., etc. have all been used with great effectiveness. (Slice the larger fruits of course!)
Sprite, 7-Up or (my favorite) Ginger Ale.
My secret ingredient, Cane Sugar Rum. (I have been using Callowood Rum that I picked up in Tortola, but recently ran out and am now looking for a suitable sub. We used to use a fruit flavored rum, even Malibu, but I much prefer the sugar cane stuff.)
Mix it all in the usual proportions and have at it.
I'm not much of a drinker, but this is good stuff on a hot day. Mixes well with my iced tea also.
My sister slices the fruit and then sautes it to bring out more of the sugars; (I just add a little extra rum!)

oh yes, i forgot the ice, you fill a large pitcher with ice and pour the wine and ingredients over it
Take a pig pot. Throw in whatever fresh or frozen fruit you like (oranges, lemons, grapes, peaches, apples, pears...a good combo). Add sugar (at least a cup, but maybe more - taste as you go to make sure it's sweet enough). Cook all that down for a while until all the fruit is tender. Let it cool. Throw in a big jug of red wine. Stir. Top with a splash of soda (either individually as you serve the glass or pour a bottle of soda into the whole thing at the end when you put in the serving container).
Other option: Take a bag of cut up frozen peaches and a bag of cut up frozen mangos. Put into a pot and cook down with suger. (just like above, adjust the sugar by tasting as you go. You need this to be fairly sweet). After they are cooked and tender, let cool. Add big jug of white wine. Girls love this.
