My girlfriend's birthday is coming up next week, and she mentioned something about this.

I think it's called "Bess", or something like that?

Anybody know if it has opened yet? Where, exactly?

Any reviews?

I spoke with two people this morning who had lunch there recently. They said it was not very good--glorified pub food. I checked the menu online -- it really doesn't sound that great. It's claim to fame is that it is owned by Sandra Bullock.

The basement design and decor was a plus in my book. Had kind of a NYC eatery feel to it from the way it was set below the office building but you could still see the streetcurb out the windows. Had a warm but hip vibe to it, if that makes sense. Good little bar that was set up wonderfully but not enough seats.

Menu had a tendencies towards almost comfort food but also had some brave ventures such as the pork we tried as well as the warm spinach salad (the dressing was anew). Wine list was aimed smack dab at mid-market but missed a chance to get some jewels within those price ranges. Seemed to go for some trendy lables and I felt breadth was lacking even for a short n' sweet wine list like that.

All in all though, solid bread and circus. At those pricepoints, you could do a lot worse in Austin. I could care less than she's involved with it, I only found out she was once we sat down from the bar area. But I do like the interior architecture. I know I tend to care more about substance in other arenas of life but I did get a kick out of the setting. Still the novelty of that will wear off and I'd like to see a little more punch from the kitchen and wine list.

We had relatives in town this weekend and my 75 year old aunt wanted to go to Bess because it is owned by Bullock.

She would not appreciate being called an "idiot".

If VY opened a place here, you know you would go just because he owned it.

Anyway, it is indeed pub food. Decent, but not over the top. They need to expand the lunch menu.

The decor is outstanding though.

Glad she invested in such a thing and did not sell it to some jackass who would develop the land into a Quizno's or Starbucks.

yes, you telling me that your grandmother wouldn't appreciate me calling her an idiot (as if in your reality I actually did) is indeed pure comedy

went there for lunch today. not bad. small, but broad lunch menu. shepherd's pie, salmon, crab cakes, burger, steak frites (or some ****), salads. i had this french thing that is a cross between eggs benedict and a patty melt. it was good. macaroni and cheese on the side.

i'm glad austin is getting many more comfort/american/home-cooking type restaurants. sometimes you just want some mac and cheese.

great setup. underground, sorta looks like the inside of cedar street.

we'll go back.

ahh, what an obscure great thread.

had no idea that Ms. Bullock has an Austin rest. as I don't live in the area anymore, so thought I would check out the scoop on this thread, and then read aunt insults being thrown back and forth. fantastic.

This thread reminds me of Seinfeld episode.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

And I like Sandra cuz she smiled at my little girl. .
