I'm thinking about taking a trip to San Juan, PR, in the spring before hurricane season begins. Anybody have thoughts or ideas? Should I do it, or should I look somewhere else in the Carribean? Thanks!
Depends on what you like to do. I went there on my honeymoon and stayed at the Caribe Hilton (the bar there is where the pina colada was invented). It was nice. No real beach, but a little man-made thing. Old San Juan was just a mile away and kinda neat. Nice architecture and history in the forts and stuff, but the cruise ships dock there and you'll be hard pressed to find anything not made in China. They reallly cater to the cruisers.
I'd recommend checking out Dorado or the east side of the island.
San Juan the city is fine, not much to it. The beach itself where the Ritz, Sheraton, etc. apparently has a crime problem. FWIW.
I spent about a week at El Conquistador, a large, very nice resort on the eastern tip of the island, and found that one or two day trips to San Juan were more than enough. You might consider doing something similar.
My gf and I went a few months ago. San Juan is great for a day, but not much else. I'm a big beach person... so we spent time on Culebra which was simply amazing. Then we rented a car on the mainland and drove to all the different beaches & El Yunque Rainforest. Honestly, I really enjoyed Culebra and would suggest you also visit Vieques.
I've been all over the Caribbean. I enjoyed other islands more.... but Puerto Rico was the cheapest by far.
