San Francisco dining

My wife and I are making our second trip out to San Francisco in the last year, love it out there. Anyway, looking for restaurant suggestions. We'll be staying near union square but it obviously doesn't have to be near our place. Anything but seafood. Thanks for the replies. Also, I need to know where to watch the Horns play UTEP 9/6.

1) John's - where Dashiell Hamet wrote "The Maltese Falcon" and featured in both the movie and the book. Mostly locals, but good food and good service, plus near Union Square.

2) Allegro - off Knob Hill, best new restaurant in SFO in last 20 years. Great veal.

3) Venticello's - great Italian near Taylor & Washignton I think

4) Izzy's - between Chestneut & Lombard - best steakhouse in SFO for many years. Don't be put off by entry way.

5) Scoma's in Saulsalito - Not to be confused with Fisherman's Wharf. Great view of SFO and Bay. I know you said no seafood, but they also have veal & steaks.

Tadich Grill on California Street is a SF institution and our "must stop" on all visits to the city. Casual, crowded and no resv, but great SF style dishes mainly fresh fish and a really good bar and grill atmosphere. Ck website, etc. Sam's is similar excellent food with a bit more reserved atmosphere............BOULEVARD near base of California street is a longstanding top SF fine dining in an upscale but casual setting

Go to Cha Cha Cha in Haight-Ashbury for Tapas...

And yes, Izzy's is the good steak / chops spot...

I think Dot's is the name of the 'famous' breakfast spot.

Be prepared to wait 40 mins at both Cha-Cha-Cha and Dots.

Place for breakfast is that hole in the wall next door to the Catholic Church where Marilyn Monroe married Joe Dimaggio at Columbus Park/Triangle/Square/Circle - whatever they call that intersection. People stand in line for 1-2 hours around the block.

Good second choice is Mel's Diner on Lombard.

I said Boardwalk when I meant Boulevard. And it is a great restaurant.

Also In-N-Out is right on the wharf!

Boulevard is just not that good. Its wildly popular for some reason, probably because it keeps making Zagat's most popular list. So, it circular. If you go back and find a thread on here about overrated restaurants, you'll see a few mentions of Boulevard. There are so many better choices in San Francisco.
