san francisco day trips

I'm headed out to San Francisco next week to visit a friend. I will be out there for about a week. Besides doing all of the typical stuff around SF, I want to see some of the surrounding area. Are there any suggestions?

We are planning to go up to the Napa and Sonoma areas.

I'm not sure if Yosemite is worth it, based on time of year (seems many passes will be closed according to the website).

Drive out Geary to PCH and then South, depending on how far you want to go - Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Carmel. Stop along the way and see Mavericks. Parking is limited and it can't be seen from PCH. Worth the walk. Lunch at Half Moon Bay (just South of Mavricks). Santa Cruz is a great little community.

When in Sonoma, take the Russian River Road to PCH and then South through Bodega Bay and Bodega, all the way to the Mountains overlooking the Golden Gate.

Not a full day trip, but go over to Tiburron and have lunch and a drink dockside.

While in Napa, have lunch at the V.Sattui winery. It has one of the best deli's I've ever been to. GREAT bread. Good wine tastings, too.

V. Sattui is great. They also opened another winery in a castle. Haven't been yet but it looks neat. Also rent bicycles and ride across the golden gate bridge. You can turn left on the other side of the bridge and ride down to Sausilito. They have a ferry you can take back across the bay. Muir Woods is great as well. Also grab dinner at Original Joe's. Take the ferry out to Alcatraz. Pay for the audio tour.
