San Fran in a day ...

So I get the chance to visit the Bay Area this weekend. It came up unexpectedly, and I'll likely only be in San Fran for Saturday.

If you had a day to burn in SF, what are some "can't miss" things to do? Attractions, good food, cool bar, etc?

Never been. Pretty excited. Thanks.

Over at Fishermans Wharf you can catch a mini tour bus that makes a loop of the city pointing out different attractions. See that then go spend some time in the places that look interesting to you. You can find some good places to eat in Chinatown and North Beach. If you want to go to Alcatraz buy tickets as far in advance as you can. I went to Alcatraz, but I was not that impressed though.

i did alcatraz too and wans't that ipmressed. some great views of the city from there though.

the last time i went, we took a ferry to Sausalito or Marin City, can't remember. we had lunch at some restaurant bar. it was a great way to spend a few hours drinking beers with a great view.

at night, some cool bars in the marina district.

A lot to do and a little bit of time. Biggest question, will you have a car? If so, an early start across the Golden Gate and left up the top of the mountain to view the Pacific & the city. Back across through Golden Gate park to Geary - right down to Cliff House and view of SF beach. Back up Geary to about 32nd, left through Lincoln Park (incredible views of bridge which you pass under) into Presidio and on to Bay down to FIsherman's Wharf. Walk Pier 39, the Wharf, back up to Ghiardelli Square and the Cannery. Stop in Buena Vista Bar, originators of "the Irsih Coffee". If time permits, travel up to Twin Peaks for the best view of SF and the Bay. Recommendation for dinner at Scoma's in Saulsalito.

Other options without a car are John's for lunch (home fo Dashiell Hamet and The Maltese Falcon). This bar/restuarant is where Hamet wrote the book and John's is featured in both the book and the movie. Take cable car across to Fisherman's Wharf and walk around. I am not a big fan of Alcatraz tour. Everyone should do it once. I was amazed at how small the prison is.

Dinner at either Allegro or Fiernza's by Night.

Great city, enjoy

breakfast : roses cafe
lunch: find a place while walking around
dinner: pesce or cafe sport

we really enjoyed just walking around and exploring the north beach/russian hill/chinatown area. unless you take the ferry or want to rent a bike to cruise marine dr and the bridge, stay away from fishermans warf.

Just got back from SF and had a great lunch at the North Beach Restaurant right on the edge of the North Beach area. An old place with great food and good wine. If you like Italian, you'll love this one. Avoid Aqua, highly touted but mediocre food, expensive, and terrible service.

A favorite thing to do of people that visit me when I live in SF Bay area.

Sail the Bay

$25 for about 1 1/2 hour + beer and on Pier 39 so you get to go to Fisherman's Warf.

DC, each to his own opinion, but the last time I was at Aqua, I got up and left without eating. Service was non existent and food was not worth s tenth the price. By that time, I was really hungry and angry and I went over to Izzy's and got some real food.
