i found 4 hotels near union square, please give me a horn up or down on what you know about these four.
1. inn @ union square
2. kensington park
3. Sir francis drake
4. handerly union square

thanks for your reviews

The St. Francis ( a Westin) is different hotel than the Sir Francis Drake. Sir Francis is about 2 blocks up the hill from the St Francis.

I've never stayed at any of these, but have stayed at another property within the same chain of two of them.

1) Inn at Union Square: haven't stayed there; looks like an independent hotel; rooms look a bit dated. I'm risk averse, so I probably wouldn't give it a shot.
2) Kensington Park: stayed at another Personality Hotel, the Hotel Diva, last year. Thought it was a great value for the rate, amenities and location (~$169--but the same hotel, same dates this year is $279

). We're going to try out another Personality Hotel (the Metropolis) next month. I would recommend this chain.
3) Sir Francis Drake: part of the boutique chain Kimpton Hotels, one of the better known of the brand. I generally like Kimptons. The star ratings are pretty accurate with this chain, so if you care about amenities and such, pay attention to that. This is probably a safe bet.
4) Handlery Union Square: don't know anything about it; photos look decent. Based on the website, I would try it if the rate was really great.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide and post a review if you're so inclined.

I have stayed at the Sir Francis Drake. Similar to the Driscoll in Austin. Older hotel with small but every nice rooms. Usually the nicest hotel near Union Square for the price.

probably of no use to you now, but stayed at the Drake and liked it. Neat bar on the top floor, Starlight Lounge (?) i think it is called. Overslept and barely made it to give a presentation which was luckily in the same building. The beds were nice, but it was probably the 'getting hammered' the night before that made me sleep in.

Also, scored a room at the Grand Hyatt near Union sqr on priceline for like $40/night. It was a nice Hyatt, but most hotel rooms look pretty much the same.
