I have started to look at TVs… and right now I’m thinking Samsung LN46A650 (maybe 750) or Panasonic TH-46PZ85U. I sort of like the brightness of the Samsung, but really want it for sports viewing…so maybe the plasma would be better for my purposes. Seems like most here prefer plasmas over LCDs… What do yall think, Panasonic?

Anything else in the $1500 range I should consider?

You're on the right track. Maybe check manufacturer's warranties and go with the better one? You can't go wrong with either of those sets as far as watching television goes. Or just find the best deal between those two (cheaper), make the jump, and don't look back.

If you decide to buy one on the interwebs (avoiding sales tax), go here, put in the address in the section store ratings "enter store name" and make sure they are reputable. Some that I would trust and seem to run the best deals are frys.com, 6ave.com, and amazon.com to name a few.

I have the LN46A750. The 750 is basically the same as the 650 except the 750 has an extra speaker and DLNA networking. At the time I purchased mine, the 750 was about $25 more.

Prior to buying the 750, I looked at various plasmas and Sony LCDs. IMO the picture quality of the Samsung was as good the Panasonics and better than the W-series Sonys.

I ended up buying the Samsung since it seems it uses less power than plasmas.

i bought the 52 inch samsung 650. its really really awesome. with all my research i found that frys had the same price as the cheapest internet site. but i paid sales tax.

Wow, he's right. Amazon has the panasonic for $1299 shipped, no tax, right now. That ain't bad.

Of course, you could go 50" for your $1499 price....

And by the way, just for disclosure, I own the Samsung LN52a550 and am pleased, although now I wish I could have waited for the 650 to come down in price. Which it did.

The Panasonic will have the samsung beat on black level, and color accuracy, and viewing angle.
The Samsung will have it with still images and fine detail. Will also look a little more 3d. Off angle you may notice your blacks start to wash a little more.
I think when it comes to fast motion both are about in the same league.
I would go with the plasma, as I am after the more accurate color and more of the true film look to it.
Both are good sets and you would be happy with either.

Also, consider reflections in your room. If you have a lot of windows and are watching daytime(football) go with the LCD over the Plasma.
