Sam McGuffie

For all of those who said Sam McGuffie was overrated, too small, too white, whatever, the kid started for Michigan today as a true frosh and looked pretty damn good. I think he had close to 100 yards, though he was splittng time with a few other backs. He would have had more had he not had 5 or so carries where he got hit just as he was taking the hand off on delayed zone read plays.

I wish Mack had recruited him. If he can start for Michigan as a true frosh, I supect he could have been a really good player for us at some point.

Kudos.

just another guy that eveyrone knew could play, but he is white and small and he wanted to play running back. it was a prejudice, plain and simple. he could play for ou or texas no problem. never understand why we pass guys up like this. welker for OU is the same thing. he was no secret in OK, let me assure you.

i know ou fans now, that claim welker wouldn't have gotten to play at ou because of the talent we had at the time. fools. they still don't get it. NFL teams can cover home. neither could the big 12.

He looked ok today, gaining 74 yards on 17 carries. He showed some flashes....but like said above it was Miami of Ohio.

Last week, against a better Utah team he had 8 carries for 8 yards. I'll hold out on judging the kid for a few more weeks.

Being that I've watched every minute of both Michigan games I'll give my thoughts on him to this point:

1. He has some serious acceleration. Able to burst through the hole or cut the corner very well.

2. Great ball protection. Any time he is going through traffic he has two hands on the ball. Not sure I've ever seen a running back (including Mike Hart) do this as well as him.

3. Good vision. Has a good idea where to go when he gets some space. Understands where his blockers are and how to use them to his advantage. That being said....Sometimes he takes the ball and appears to go into the line without a clear idea of what to do once he gets there.

4. Don't know what his top speed is as he hasnt had a breakaway yet.

5. In my opinion he goes down too easily at the LOS. Great ball protection but doesnt push the pile at all and doesnt fight through tackles at the LOS.

6. I'm a little unsure of his attitude. There was a play last week where the QB held onto the ball too long on the Zone Read and it ended up looking like McGuffie fumbled when it was really on the QB. McGuffie got up and you could tell he was pointing to the QB as if to make sure people knew who was at fault. I've also seen him appear to get frustrated easily.

Basically he has shown flashes of the ability people have talked about. It's going to take a lot of time for the whole Michigan offense to gel...and that's not counting learning a new system. Michigan lost a boat load of talent and experience off that offense from last year.

True stuff. If the idea that being WHITE is a detrement as a runner holds water then maybe the idea of being black in the classroom has merit?

I speak as a white former back who has had to face the same BS.

We didn't recruit him not because he was white but rather because he wasn't interested in Texas. As I understand it he had a major chip on his shoulder and wanted to play in the Big 10. Is he skilled? Yes we all know he is, anyone who watched him in the AAA game knows he can play the game. We've had white runningbacks in the past, anyone remember Bret Robins the guy who missed his block on Roy williams that cost us the game in 2k1. (Sorry but that is the only play I remember about him).

bret robin was an excellent change of pace guy, imo. okay maybe not excellent but too good to be remembered for one play and especially when that play is '01 evil roy. we could have been on their 2 yard line that day and probably wouldn't have scored.

too early to tell for mcguffe. he has the speed/moves but we'll have to see if texanvolv isn't right about him being taken down too easily...

Robin was in that game to block because Mack felt that Benson couldn't. Benson was on the field for one play and didn't touch the ball. That was the first time time it became obvious to me that Mack didn't like playing underclassmen, no matter how talented.

Last year, my daughter's Kindergarden classmate was the son of the Cy-Fair head coach. I met the coach at open house shortly after McGuffie hurt his ankle on national TV last year. Later in the school year at one of the classmate's birthday parties I met the coach's wife who said Mack Brown never came around to inquire about Sam. But she said she did get to meet Charley Weis, Bob Stoops and Pete Carroll who all came to see Sam.

Earlier poster was right that McGuffie wanted out of town - so Mack was smart enough not to waste his time (and he wanted Darrell Scott more). McGuffie's Dad went to Michigan and his mother went to A&M, so UT was never in the picture. Plus that, in some ways he was damaged goods. He never looked as good as he did his junior year after the early senior year ankly sprain.
