Sam is Doing Well in Pro Camp So Far

Jacob Eason has Elway-level arm talent but his football aptitude is in question. Even if Eason get's tabbed QB1, expect lots of struggles.

As a Seahawk fan our week 1 game got a lot easier with Wentz going down.

The article said Eason was a “statute” in the pocket.

That must be the “pocket veto” I’ve heard of….

From an article on nfl.com today:

"2) Colts coach Frank Reich said it was a "fair question" to ask whether sixth-round rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger is worthy of a bigger role after outplaying nominal starter Jacob Eason in practice over the last week, in the wake of Carson Wentz's foot surgery. Ehlinger is a nice story so far, but the fact that he's reportedly going through his reads more quickly than Eason, a second-year player, doesn't bode well for the Colts' current setup. Watching the young kids for a preseason game or three makes some sense, but I still expect the Colts to add another veteran quarterback to the mix before the regular season begins, given Wentz's uncertain recovery timetable."

from nfl.com--
"The Colts' ongoing storyline at quarterback took a slight turn on Tuesday with rookie Sam Ehlinger seeing reps with the first-team offense. It was the first time the sixth-round QB worked with the first-team offense, according to The Athletic's Zak Keefer, and with that Ehlinger also saw a starting NFL defense for the first time. In the wake of Carson Wentz's foot injury, it was second-year QB Jacob Eason taking those reps up until his point. The two split the starting reps on Tuesday and will do so for the remainder of the week including the team's oncoming joint practices with the Panthers. "It wasn't Jacob (Eason) doing anything wrong," Reich told reporters after practice, per The Athletic's Stephen Holder. "This is a meritocracy and Sam (Ehlinger) has looked good so we decided to split it up. The good news is they both looked sharp today. We'll continue to split those reps." Ehlinger, who started three seasons at Texas, has shown pocket poise and an effective ability to run the ball during his college years, which is an aspect that could potentially separate himself from Eason. It's still unclear how long the Colts will be without Wentz, but coach Frank Reich and the Colts have maintained their desire to roll with what they have at QB before making any drastic moves. Tuesday's development will certainly lead to speculation of an all-out QB competition between Eason and Ehlinger for the right to start Week 1 should Wentz remain absent."

It’s not time yet to count the chips, but I said earlier this year that I thought Sam would do better as a pro than Duvernay, Collin Johnson and LJ Humphrey, and that we would say in retrospect that he carried them, not vice versa. That’s still to be seen, but I want to repeat my prediction.

I don't have a thought either way, but it does seem that that take is relative. If they all become semi productive, but not ProBowl type players, aren't they in generally the same ballpark? Hard to say anyone carried anyone at that point, even if you grade one as a B+ player and one as a B- player?

VY, I would love for you to be right. I didn’t see it, but would love to be wrong.

I like all those players and wish them all the best. I think that if Ehlinger becomes an actual starting NFL QB, with a career similar to Colt McCoy, that would be the separation that would carry the point. I believe that is in play, but as they say, that’s why they play the games!

An important part of it is that I believe Sam has been playing with an injured shoulder and I think he can throw the ball much better than what we saw at UT. With the rest of his skill set, I think he is an NFL starter.

I do want to place this bet, but I do expect someone to give me 3:1 odds on it if I am right!

For those who didn't have a chance to watch it, Sam had a good showing against Carolina's defense today. According to the announcers, he was supposed to play a a quarter or quarter and a half. He played the entire second half, leading the Colts from down 18-10 to tie the game with some nice touch passes, some timely scrambles and then scored the two point conversion to tie. Colts got the ball back and Sam led a clock eating drive down inside the five, where coaches opted to have Sam center the ball in the middle of the field and take a knee three times, then kick the FG to win. Don't know who the color announcer was, but he is now the new president of the Sam Fan Club.

Tarik Black had a few key catches from Sam during that fourth quarter.

Just posted a separate thread…forgetting about this one.

Sam was excellent…

Word in Vegas last week is that the foot injury is coming along well enough that Wentz could be ready for Week 1, that the healing was on the near side of the 5-12 week estimates, not the back end.

I caught that on more than one of the local discussions with the sports book names who have a livelihood which depends on knowing such things. Same sort of names that were speaking highly of Texas and brought the number for the Big 12 down to +700 from +850 (and natty to +3200 from +4500). These are the people that, when they speak, lines can move...
