Salt Lake City Ski Areas

What's everyone opinion the Ski Salt Lake Area? I know there's four mountains-- Brighton, Alta, Snowbird, and Solitude. Does anyone have any preferences? I'm an intermediate advanced snowboarder comfortable going down greens, blues, and some of the easier blacks.

Another thing-- I will be there over Presidents Day Weekend. I know that there are free shuttle buses from downtown to the ski areas. How long does it take to get up to the ski areas from there? I have a free place to stay in downtown, hence I wont be staying in the resort accommodations.

Thanks!

i would do a day in solitude and a day at park city resort. i used to religiously go to the canyons but have fully realized that while the resort may be nice, the mountain in terms of skiing/snowboarding sucks. the runs are short and you have to use too many lifts.

pc affords longer runs and better layout. and it's going to be just as crowded as the canyons so imo, the more time you spend on runs and not in lift lines and lifts, the better.

but spend a day at either brighton or solitude. brighton has more kids and punks boarders. i'm a boarder but brighton is known for it's youth and attitude. solitude is a nicer place. but if you want to be in the boarder scene then brighton is your place. and solitude is as it's name describes. you can ride down runs and not see another person. HEAVEN. both are really nice local mountains. they both have great runs and the lines aren't long. but you won't get the resort atmosphere.

that's why i suggest doing solitude and pc. to get the feel of both.

I was just out in Utah for business a few weeks ago. HI only had one day to ski and was thinking Brighton for an all-day/night lift ticket. I ended up getting a late start start on a Saturday and the Sheriff's department was turning cars around from Brighton because the parking lots were full; cars were parked about a hal mile down the canyon road. I went back down to Solitude and got there right after the parking lot filled up, but I was able to park just outside the parking lot entrance at Solitude out on the canyon road. It was great skiing and would echo the above comment. I would definitely echo Ank and Crash's comments about Soli being the least crowded - the place is aptly named. The longest line I was in on a Saturday afternoon had about four pairs of skiers/boarders in front of me.

Utah is an incredibly beautifal state.

Solitude definitely sounds like the place for me, not a fan of the huge long lift lines. Have any of you all had the experience of riding any of the shuttles from downtown up to the ski areas..or how long does it normally take to get up to them? Thanks again for all the advice!

I've given up on weekend skiing, it's just to damn crowded.
I have enough vacation time accrued in Winter so we can ski during the week.
I damn near got taken out my last Saturday of skiing.

you sir, have never been to solitude on a weekend.

I am headed to Salt Lake City this weekend. I will have Friday afternoon and Sunday to ski. Is Snowbird the only mountain open this late?
