Sake on 6th

I've only eaten there once and it was the first week it was open about 2 years ago. I recall it being a solid sushi place, not spectacular.

If you do go, please put a report up. I have wondered about this place too. thanks

two words: F_______ing horrible

seriously... be smart and go to Uchi, Musachino, or ANYWHERE else. I went there once, as I promised to try it when I met the mktg chick, but I was VERY dissapointed in the quality of the fish. I am not even talking originality of menu (like Uchi), but just quality of ingredients was very poor on the time I went. Furthermore, having talked to a few sushi people in austin, they echoed my sentiments

"not that bad"

I dont mean to come off like a snob, but if you are going to eat sushi, you should really only get really good sushi. Mediocre sushi makes no sense to me. In addition to it not tasting good, you run the risk of food poisoning that often accompanies sushi which has been sitting around for 3-4 days.

so now Sake on 6th's sushi is "bad" as in old, and it has been sitting around for days?

hilarious.

again, it's not among the best places in Austin, but it's DEFINITELY not bad in the sense that the fish is rotting, and it is not bad in terms of poor presentation either.

what makes it not the best is that they focus more on trying to make it an overall experience, with the music and everything.

Ehhh... Not as bad as Crayon made it out to be, but it was average at best. We ordered some nigiri and a few rolls. The nigiri was okay, I'd say about 1/2 of the fish was very fresh, the other 1/2 was so so. The rolls weren't anything to write home about, just okay. Overall, I'd give the food an average grade.

For a large party the service was slow. We probably waited around 25-30 minutes for the food. The waitress was attentive and interactive. Despite some ******** in my group, she held up pretty well after a little pep talk from me.

The ambience of the place was blah. Definitely not traditional Japanese. Looks like they were going the "trendy" route, but fell down there as well. We were there for about 2.5 hours, and there were maybe 5-6 other tables. Turnover wasn't very high, which explains the freshness of the fish.

There was one incident : One of the girls found a fly in her wasabi/soy sauce mix. It probably came from the soy sauce bottle (the doors to the place were open, and a fly could've crawled in), but it definitely ruined the dining experience for a lot of the group. The managers could've done the right thing and comped the 3 people who shared the same "boat", but they only offered 1/2 off. But like I said earlier, the people in my group probably could've been nicer about it instead of shouting and bitching at the top of their lungs.

Bottom line is I probably won't go back. For $20-$25 per person, there are a lot better sushi places.

Will - not all sushi CAN sit around for more that 24 hours. Salmon can sit around for a little while, but toro and hamachi kama last about 24 hours before the taste changes. Thats why the good places run out of it all the time because they can only order what they anticipate selling THAT night or maybe the next night.

As for S on 6th - I guess y'all are right. You CAN find worse sushi in austin if you drive around enough. I just haven't had worse sushi here as like I said, I'm a snob. But of the places I've been:
Kinichi, Kyoto, Uchi, Musachino, Mikado, Umi,
its the worst.
