Saggin..

Do you sag? Do you have a problem w/ those who do?

Age and a growing waist have pretty much killed my saggin days, but I don't have a problem w/ those who do..even though the pants are much lower than back in the 90's when I used to do it.

I'm off today and watching Dr. Phil because of the idiot Caraway from Dallas. I didn't realize that this was such a big issue around the country. To me it's just a fashion trend.

I hear alot about how this stereotypes black kids and makes them look like criminals. Like people weren't commiting crimes back in the day w/ the tight jeans and john stockton's.

I just think that there are more important issues in this world than baggy pants. Besides you can't legislate common sense. That's what parents are for(even if you have only one.)

It's not just black kids, it's kids in general. I work at a private agency that works with juvenile/ younger offenders from all over the State and we've fought really hard to stop sagging at our facilities simply because it's an affectation of "prison mentality" by the kids (which is what we are trying to de-program).

Since part of our program is to train them to work in construction and build houses with them, it's also a safety issue.

Outside of work, while I think it looks stupid, I could care less how a person dresses as long as they conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. I'm not coordinated enough to keep the sag as low as I've seen it on some of the kids at the mall lately and really don't understand the point. How is it comfortable if you have to hold your belt as you walk?

Just my $.02

i dont have a problem with it. I just think those guys look ridiculous with their pants halfway around their thighs.

I dont see how they keep em up

I think it looks ridiculous, but when I was a kid we had plenty of fashion trends that looked stupid as well (any of you late 80s folks wear your boxers hanging out under your shorts? We did.

).

I don't have any first-hand experience regarding whether or not it either reflects or promotes a criminal mentality, so I won't comment on that aspect.

Didn't the whole "saggin" trend originate from the fact that prisoners aren't allowed to wear belts, which often caused their pants to sag? And that was adopted by the hip-hop culture?

If I'm way off on that then I apologize, and I'm sure someone will correct me. But If that is the case, then it absolutely connotes a criminal/prison mentality.

Whatever the case, it looks flat out stupid.

You are correct. It started with the lack of belts. Then prisoners began to accentuate the sag even more to show that they were "attached", so to speak, to another prisoner and as such any harm to them would prompt revenge from someone else.

This was then carried over to pop culture through hip hop. FWIW, the baggy boxers thing comes from the same source.

Chick's thong peaking out of the side of her jeans = hot
some dude's boxers or underwear on display for the world = retarded

I was told that the trend originated from prisoners as a secret sign to tell people they were the prisoners willing to take it in the ***. At least that's what someone told me. Too lazy to get verification.

I think the trend says, "Hire me to work for your firm because I will be an invaluable asset to your environmental services division." Maybe I'm reading too much into it...

good point. I was thinking more in terms of an internet search. Not sure I'm willing to do any market research of my one. Where NAIU when we need him?

I don't know when hornfans became fashion critics. It's always baffled me as to why a guy would give a **** as to what another guy is wearing. That is of course, unless the guys is wearing skinny jeans. That's just weird.

I think its a great way for the idiotic in our society to mark themselves so that the normal portion of the population can keep a safe distance.

I do not get the mindset of the young black males who do this. Why not just wear a sign that says Law Enforcement: Please Racially Profile Me.

I personally don't care what people do so people who want to sag go for it. But what I think sucks is that people sag and then get mad at other people for thinking it's a ****** fashion trend. Do what you want but don't expect everyone else to like it.

Also, please note that most people don't want to have their employees sag at work. It's their business and they make the rules. If you have a problem with that, then go find another job.

I was watching a high school basketball game a while back and watched a kid lose a chance at wide open lay-up because he had to pause a step and hike up his shorts mid-dribble. If I were the coach he would have been sitting the bench then.

I don't see the fashion in looking like you are walking with a loaded diaper and in a school setting, baggy, saggy can also be a huge security issue and a safety issue. I have visions of trying to exit the building in a panic and one of the saggers falls on the stairs, causing a bunch more to fall over him, not to mention what weapons are hidden. Might be an irrational fear, I know, but when you see people crushed in panic piles...

It's an ongoing issue at my school. Dress code (as determined by elected school board officials) says no sag. Let me tell you how much fun enforcement is. My opinion, I could care less what their parents let them wear at home, but I do think part of my job is preparing kids to enter the workplace. Saggy jeans do not equal long-term, gainful employment.
