Saddest thing ever: Aggies' offer board

his strategy is to get clubbed over the head by a hammer and then come back for more.

seriously though, i dont know what his strategy is at this point. i THINK he's not putting much stock in early committments thinking that 8-10 wins this year is a much better recruiting pitch than a bunch of lip service....which is a pretty damn big gamble.

another point of interest i have is that we seem to sell out trying to recruit kids that are picking between A&M, texas, ou...upper tier teams, and then we lose out on our back up players to osu and tcu simply because we didnt offer quickly enough.

i'd always been relatively impressed with sherman's ability to recruit up till now (considering how we **** the bed almost every week on the field). i'm sure he has a plan this year...i just cant, for the life or me, figure out what that plan is.

no moral victory there. literally there are a few players that showed interest in us, and we offered them 24 hours before they committed elsewhere...when the writing was on the damn wall that they were committing elsewhere, we throw an offer their way.

that's not running out of time. that's just stupidity.

I don't know which is more remarkable: the fact that they have offered 78 guys or the fact that only 7 of them have commtted. All of them 3 stars.

I liken the current Aggy state of affairs "all offense & no defense" to what Texas whet thru prior to Mack's arrival under the regime of John Mackovic! The only exception was that Mackovic could recruit 4 & 5 * players and moved some of them to offense. At least he could recruit... we see Sherman can't do that!

Joe,
You should have thought about that before you married aTm. It's not like you couldn't have seen the signs had you been looking for them.

the aggies were an old family friend. my dad was an international grad student here....flew from mumbai, to new york, to houston, to college station back in the 70s. propjoe was an aggie from birth.

and at the time that i picked them they were good looking in shape funny nice to be around, and everyone seemed to want to be with them...maybe they had a secret coke habit...but i didnt know so i didnt care.

You're all right, PJ. There is a dignity in loyalty but with open eyes that neither giving up nor ignoring the problem can match. I have an Ag friend in West Texas with whom I imagine you would get along famously.

PropJoe,

You're a freakin' riot, man. That's really good stuff. IMO, the aggys are set up for some success on the field this season if they can just catch a break or two with the new players they are plugging in on the OL and get just a little something out of the defense. Your skill position players are second to none and Jerrod Johnson definitely looks like the real deal to me. If you can get over on the piggies up in Dallas, you could get on a real roll and be a force late in the season. I am relieved that we play you in Austin this year.

I like your chances on the OL as that is Sherman's specialty and he has some exceptional young talent to work with. I don't know much about DeRuyter and the defense.

i'm not really all too worried about our offense...as long as we can be consistent. one game we put up 50, then **** the bed the next.

our success is predicated on defense...as it has been for the past few years. deruyter can seriously earn his money this year by even making us halfway decent. i think hiring deruyter has the potential to end up saving sherman's career at A&M.

i have no expectations whatsoever for this year, which i think is a good thing.

although, admittedly, our recruiting for this year's class is concerning.

Your schedule is doable ... should be no worse than 5-2 at home. Piggie and osu look beatable and you'll be favored over Kansas and Baylor. 8-4 seems reasonable.

if we dont hit 8 wins, i think everyone has reason to be concerned. and by concerned i mean reason to panic. and by panic, i mean sink into a deep state of apathy.

i'd settle for no blowout losses. that would be good enough for me at this point.

Wow, an Aggie w realistic expectations! I knew there had to be one out there somewhere, lol.

How are u received on the Ag boards? Really curious.

pretty well, i guess.

i think you'll find that most of us that spend a lot of time on the boards (and by a lot i mean that i've been on texags for 10 years with 17k posts..yikes), have a realistic impression and a healthy amount of realistic frustration at where our football program is.

when i was in college i used to be a johnny redass with a saw em off sticker on my car, but the older i got, the more i mellowed out and appreciated college football for college footballs's sake. and i know that i can be proud of being an A&M alum and my connection to all things aggie without having to piss all over what texas is doing. two different things in my mind.

Hey Prop - do you mind sharing with us what fish camp is like as it regards to tee u?
When I went with my daughter to visit with her high school counselor I noticed his Ag diploma on the wall.
I asked him how they (ags) learn all those game day chants and he jokingly said, ".....they brain wash you at fish camp".
He was a cool cat but I was shocked that he said that. Can you give some insight? Thanks.

you know, i've been to fish camp many many times as a professional staff member (I work at A&M), and i really dont think it's quite as indoctrinating as most make it out to be. i think there's definitely some "let's make fun of texas" and "they're our rivals, and we're better than them", and the whole "hissing" thing when someone mentions "t.u.", but i dont think it's done in a malicious hateful way, nor do i think it's probably any different from what's shared at camp texas about ou or A&M .

then again, i might be a bit slanted by the fact that i'm an "insider"

i think some kids just get really really into it. most just look at it as an opportunity to meet people...and roll their eyes at the silly stuff.

on the whole i think fish camp is pretty harmless. i also think that the new generation of students coming to college are likely to have applied to both A&M and UT, and are just happy to be at a tier 1 university.

Thanks Joe; I've been curious about fish camp since he made that comment - 2005.
Like I said, he was a very cool dude, and he helped my daugther a lot.

Hey Prop, back to the recruiting thing... I think the shermanator may be better suited to the pro game than college, since the only thing you recruit there is free agents. I know he spent time in college before going to the Packers, but when he put his agricultural staff together, he showed that he didn't value recruiting as much as, say, Mack or Stoopsie. His coaches may have had an NFL lineage, but they still have a lot to learn about bringing in the best college players.

I still say the ags suffer from location, with us, LSU, and okie basically surrounding them. Their recruiting the last couple of years hasn't been abysmal, especially on the offensive side, but if the ags don't find a way to bring some high calibre defensive players in THIS class, Sherman may not get much more time to show he's learned something about the recruiting game. Right now, agricultural's looking as one-sided toward offense as we did back in the Mackovic days...or more so.

completely agree.

sherman is jekyll and hyde as far as recruiting goes. when he took over for sherman, he added a few good players to an otherwise solid class...both offensive and defensive. his past couple of classes have been pretty solid as well. at that time i would have classified sherman as a "solid" recruiter...not great, but not awful either...much better at talent evaluation than fran was.

i know there is a plan in place for this class, i just dont know what it is. we really need good defensive talent in this class...especially at the LB position. if we strike out with the dallas wallace, the california wallace, and with the LBs we're looking at in florida...well this class starts to be pretty damn bad--akin to fran's later classes which were basically the writing on the wall indicating that he wasnt going to succeed.

this season is critical. we have to make positive steps forward. if we dont, well then chalk sherman up as another post slocum failure.

PJ, I feel for you, in all seriousness. My fellow principals in our firm are two Ags, one Red Raider and one measly Pitt St'r. Amazingly the two Ags remain steadfast in their Corp induced loyalties and repeat the very same mantra that you described in an earlier post: i.e. this season is different, etc.
However as of late, they have simply surrendered to reality a little more. UT is in their "season" of outlandish prosperity and A&M is in the valley of woes. It doesn't stop them from talking **** every so often (including this morning). I don't rib them back because I remember all too well our valley dwelling (Undergrad 90-94) and know exactly how defeating my own psyche was to myself. I didn't need anyone's help, especially from a rival school.

A&M will rebound one day. I don't believe it to be under the guise and leadership of Shermy but then again, what do I know really. I'm just a die-hard, loyal orangeblood who happens to have hitched my wagon to a school I am awesomely grateful to and am richly rewarded for by their recent success.

As all things in life, nothing is above change and I know that one day UT will not be in this position.

But until then... HOOK'EM HORNS, *******!!!

thanks houshorn. i'm not going to lie. this era (how long is an era? feels like a lifetime) of A&M football is just awful. absolutely awful. i live in college station, and i have to talk myself into going to the games.

i have to tell myself that it has to get better because it certainly cant get any worse. i'm just kind of numb to it all right now.

if sherman isnt the guy, that's fine...i just hope we figure it out sooner rather than later, so we dont have to go through round three of "coach x left the cupboard bare, and it will take us a while to be competitive".
