Saddam faked WMD, planned to restart program

Didn't you get the memo? Bush knew for a fact that Saddam didn't have WMD, but Bush knowingly lied about it because he is a warmongering fascist who wanted to consolidate his authoritarian police state power at home by trumping up fake threats abroad. There's nothing more to the story. You obviously haven't been reading this board enough.

Yeah as I understand it - Bush is an evil mastermind warlord who lied about WMD to get us into Iraq, then didn't follow through with planting the weapons when we got there.

Bush is a total moron, but somehow is still capable of manipulating congress into going to war. Oh, and he's a dumbass chimpanzee who dynamited building seven and has kept everybody quiet about it despite the repeated admnistration leaks on other less important circumstances.

It all makes sense when you stop thinking about it.

"then didn't follow through with planting the weapons when we got there."

This is what I've always wondered...
I mean, why not plant them.... If you truly didn't believe it?

This whole thing of resurrecting the cause for the war and reframing how it happened is beginning to come off like the repeated assertion that Reagan single-handedly won the Cold War. A grass roots Ministry of Truth that not only repeats their side in different ways but also recharacterizes the opposition in absurd ways.

Roma, there are lots of people who think of Bush exactly how I characterized it. I never said everyone who disagrees with Bush thinks that way. Your post is exactly what I was exepcting when I made my post. You ignore the story about what Saddam told the interrogator and just assert that your view of what happened leading up to the war and who is to blame should be unchallenged orthodoxy.

Funny how this thread is overlooked by all the Bush bashers who are hanging out on the other Bush lied thread.

Saddam reminds me of the bro's in the 'hood who when caught with a pistol said, "I'd rather be caught by the cops with the pistol than caught by the guys in the 'hood without one."

I think most people saw where things were headed. It doesn't take a soothsayer. And, I bet right now you are thinking of a way to insult me.

I seriously doubt you are thinking of ways to address the WMD topic.

Voted for Bush twice and at the time I thought what he did was a good thing....because, well, I thought, surely our gov't isn't stupid enough to make the same mistake again, so they have to "know" something. Right? i mean srsly.....So, i trusted our gov't to invade a county that had nothing to do with why we were fighting in Afghanistan ...

1st of all it's not a war.

2nd of all you can twist all the reports and name drop all you want but the fact remain that's this administration used terrorists, 9-11,WMD, and fear to invade a country that didn't need to be invaded and in doing so completely turned a blind eye to the very reason we were fighting in the 1st place.

3rd It was a bad idea and colossal mistake but hindsight is 20/20 and everyone can second guess decisions made so discussing why we are there is really a waste...I'd rather discuss how the hell do we get out.

4th I'm with the planting the WMD in the desert idea...i mean crap why stop lying to us now...you might as well plant the evidence for the whole reason we're there...talk about a horrible time to get honesty

I am completely confused. Maybe some can clear it up.

This guys retelling of what Saddam supposedly told him is supposed to do what? Is the point here that Saddam somehow tricked the US? WTF? I guess Saddam was such a reliable character that if he had said, 'I don't have any WMD's', that the war wouldn't of happened.

shotgun beat me to it. It occurred to me after I posted last that I wasn't sure what anybody is intended to glean from this article. It's interesting and confirms that Saddam didn't have WMD if he is telling the truth.

There was an article a few years ago about how Saddam may have been bilked out of millions of dollars by people claiming they were doing weapons development when they were doing nothing but pocketing the money. Interesting and not terribly relevant.

Saddam also wanted to be the leader of a pan-Arabic Islamic state. Doesn't mean he was going to get it.

I can't believe anyone thinks this exonerates the Bush Administration or excuses the war.

Seriously, if you still believe that the administration went to war for the reasons stated, and were forthcoming about it, then you too partisan to even change what you believe. This was simply a neo-con war that was built on the premise of building a democratic middle east. There were others who supported it for their own personal gain, but none of it had anything to do with terrorism, WMD or the short term safety of US. I do believe that some of the neo-con architects of the war believed that this will make the world and US safer in the long term. Heck, they could even be right. I don't think it is worth the cost for us, but that doesn't mean that it may not have any long term positive benefits to the world.

sak gets it right. The WMD was the excuse given to the public to justify the war, not the reason Bush started the war.
It was all about nation building. It could all turn out to the advantage of the U.S. in time, but it sure doesn't look likely to me. And it won't be remotely worth the price we are paying unless the whole region decides to become Kansas.
