Recruiting history was made and the face of recruiting
itself was changed when Alabama Head Coach Nick
Saban officially offered an athletic scholarship to a
fetus in it's seventh month of gestation this week.

The fetus is known only as "Baby X" because the parents
have yet to name him. Usually coaches are prevented
from discussing potential recruits, but Saban said that he
has been advised by council that since Baby X has yet
to be born that these rules don't apply yet.

"As you know recruiting is the life's blood of college
football," said Saban. "At Alabama we have put together
a network of obstetricians in the "hotbeds" of recruiting to
give us the jump on possible future recruits," Saban also
told us. He went on to say that whenever one of our
baby doctors think they see something special in a fetus
they let us know.

The Obstetrician that discovered Baby X spoke with us
on the condition of anonymity. "Baby X had unusually
large developed hands and feet early in the second
trimester and showed a great deal of movement in the
womb," said the attending doctor. With the fact that
the fetus came from parents that were athletes in
their own right made it time to contact Coach Saban
said the obstetrician.

We asked Coach Saban why he didn't wait till at least
the child was born before making an offer. "Our sources
told us that LSU was aware of Baby X and was going
to offer at birth,"said Saban. "We wanted in first on an offer
since we have had an eye on Baby X since the first
sonogram that showed he was a male," replied Saban.

We also spoke to the parents and again they only
agreed to speak with us on the condition of not being
identified. "We are both honored by the interest in our
child to be and hope that the right decision will be made
when the time comes," said the mother of Baby X.
"My wife and I are flattered by the early interest of the
schools and will make a decision sometime after the
healthy birth of our child," said the father.

We asked the parents of Baby X what the timetable
might look like for commiting to a scholarship and if any school
had an advantage. "We do recognize that Alabama was in
first on recruiting Baby X, but we honestly don't have a
favorite at this time," said Mommy X. "We do know that once
our child is born and has a name we want him in on the
decision,"chimed in Daddy X. The parents said they
realize that the schools might lose interest if they waited
too long to make at least a verbal commitment. Mommy X
said they are considering making some kind of decision
on Baby X's first birthday. "We know we can't wait too
long to make some kind of commitment or they might move on
to the next fetus with potential," stated Mommy X. "So
Daddy X and I are considering on Baby X's first
birthday lining up rattles with the school emblem of all
involved and letting him crawl to them and pick up the winning
rattle, we think that's fair,"said an excited Mommy X.

Before we left we asked Coach Saban if he thought
that early recruitment had gone too far and if he
expected even earlier recruitment in the future.
"With the improvement of technology in this field we
certainly expect even earlier recruitment, said Saban.
"We are already looking into examining the sperm of the
father and the ovaries of the mother," Saban went
on to say. "Also we have been told by some of our
doctors that cloning recruits will be an option in the not
too near future, we certainly look forward to that
possibility," replied Saban. "As to your first question
we at Alabama know how vital recruiting is to the
success of our football program and we will do
whatever it takes to keep Alabama football and me
winning championships for years to come," said
Saban with a gleam in his eye and a specially made
Alabama rattle in hand.
