S. Congress / Downtown apts/lofts

I'm moving to Austin for grad school, and a friend who went to UT undergrad suggested I post here to ask around for some opinions.

Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions about living downtown or on S. Congress? I'm ideally looking for a loft or something with a stronger urban feel (hardwood floors, walking distance to restaurants/bars/etc)

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I just moved from Oak Hill to an apartment off Congress and Oltorf. The location is incredible (walking distance to work), but it might be a little further south than what you want. Price isn't too bad for the location, about 850 a month for a 2/1.5.

I'm looking for a 1BR at around 700 to rent. I'm used to a 30 minute commute, so as long as it's less than 40 minutes or so, distance isn't too much a problem.

You will have no problem with any commute, if you're used to 30 minutes and you want to live downtown,, then walking would be a good option for that. I have a couple of friends that live downtown, I'll ask them what they pay for their places.

Right now I have a 1/1 with hardwood floors and a small enclosed patio (yard is stretching it!) going for $585. It's a small little community if you like that, and it's just south of downtown.

If you go a little further south you can get something brand new with some wood floors, maybe etched concrete, that will be in your price range. I sent you a PM yesterday.
