S. 1st Tex-Mex and La Reyna

I LOVE the nighborhood that I live in. The area of S. 1st between The Texas School for the Deaf and about 1/2 south of Oltorf is Tex-Mex heaven.

Anyway I know there are Jovita's and Polvo's fans all over this BBS, but I think thet La Reyna has some of the best Tex-Mex I have had - ever.

Anyone else tried this place? The taco shells are fried in house and the salsa is fresh adn hot as hell.

What are your S. 1st area favorties? I am also a huge fan of Polvo's and El Nopalito - plus Maudie's South, Guero's and Curra's are not far away.

S. Austin rocks - and I am not just saying this because I just got home form the Horseshoe Lounge

I also live on S. 1st, and my favorite is El Nopalito. I love the fact that I can order taco al pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, or whatever other kind of taco for breakfast. Everything I have had on the menu has been great.

I ate at La Reyna recently and had the tacos and wasn't happy. The "fresh" shells were burnt and something else I forgot.

I have eaten at all the s. 1st places so much, I decided to go to the east side today for lunch. I ended up a Cisco's and it was good. Not overwhelmingly flavorful or spicy, but I was not disappointed. I had the Cisco Plate with a taco, cheese enchilada, and 1/4lb of fajita meat.

GB, you need to keep your mouth shut about La Reyna. Actually, go ahead and do you and I a favor and delete this post. The last thing I want is my spot overrun by yuppies and prices jacked up. I won't even take my folks there, I send them to Guerro's or something.

La Reyna is the best tex-mex/mexican/whatever food in Austin, hands down. There is no better place for hung-over Sunday brunch, or any other meal for that matter.

Also, another thing about that hood you should know before you delete this post: G and S

My one experience at La Reyna was comical. The food was good, but conversing with the waitress was next to impossible. I can't speak Spanish, she couldn't speak English, and so we pretty much resorted to pointing and sign language. No big deal, but I felt like I was traveling in another country.

Don't forget Arandas and Little Mexico. Arandas has great carne guisada and menudo.

My favorite was El Borrego do Oro, until a car crashed into the front of it and they had to close it down. They had the best menudo in town.

jimmyjazz, all you need to know at times like that is, "mas cerveza, por favor". You are welcome.

I will try that place. Fan68 and Smurf live in your hood too.

La Reyna is great, I discoverd that place a couple years ago and really liked it. It was especially good for minors if you catch my drift. Food is really good too.

I eat at La Reyna fairly often for living as far north as I do. I come from West Texas where authentic Mexican food restaurants are EVERYWHERE... and I think La Reyna is the only place I have been to near here that can compare as far as authenticity goes.
