Running in New Orleans

I'll be staying in the French Quarter for business for a few days. Anybody know a good running route from the Quarter (three to five mile loop)? Or, to pose it another way, is there a direction that I should avoid?

I haven't been to NOLA since Katrina, but I used to run an out and back on St. Charles Avenue. Never felt threatened.

If you run south/west on St. Charles you'll be running through the Garden District which should be pretty safe (but I haven't been since Katrina either). I would avoid any other direction outside of the Quarter. You could get in a 3 mile loop just running around the quarter by starting at the walkway along the river north to the end, jump on Decatur to Esplanade, take a left on Esplanade, left on Rampart, left on Poydras returning to river. That's about 3.5 miles.

I've run the Crescent City Classic about 10 times. It used to be a great run.

just get a cab to drop you off here and you'll have an invigorating run.

go to Runnersworld.com and search for places to run in destinations. There is a good run that goes from the Marriott into uptown along the trolley line. The trail is mostly grass and soft and you can make it about 10miles if you go all the way to Tulane and back to the Marriott.

Running on St. Charles from the quarter wouldn't be bad, probably not too much to see until you get further uptown though...I might suggest parking at Audubon Zoo and running along the levee, it's a terrific run along the river, there's a bike path that stretches 22 miles out but accomodates all types of pedestrians. PM me if you want specific directions.

So I left my hotel on Conti street just off Bourbon for my run at around 6am. The first thing I see is a couple with beers in their hands. Back in the day that would have been me (in fact it was on one occasion in 1990), but I was ready for my run.

I ended up heading out to Canal and going left all the way to the River, running along the embankement for a while merging back into the street and down to Esplanade. Esplanade to Bourbon, Bourbon to Canal, up to whatever street is the top of the French Quarter then back to Conti and my hotel. Probably a little over three miles and a great run.

The trip to NOLA was interesting. The Quarter seems about normal. Downtown is pretty normal except a high percentage of street signs are missing. Some other neighborhoods that I saw seem stressed, but not devestated. But the lower 9th ward was profoundly sad to me. Unbelievable what happened there.
